Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

I will be starting to fill my Tolbunt "Spring" orders once I have some eggs set in the incubator. If I comes down to I can't fulfill my obligations I will get with each individual I owe eggs to and we will work something out.

PLEASE EVERYONE...............DON'T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY !!

I have a concern with the offers for eggs in the Spring etc.... how far out is everyone extending themselves? What happens if you lose your flocks? Predators, disease.....whatever. Or if situations change and you can't afford the shipping? It almost seems like some will be extended all the way to summer, at least.

AGAIN........PLEASE DO NOT BE OFFENDED OR CHEW ME OUT. Just a concerned chicken friend.

I certainly understand your concern. It is one of the reasons I choose not to offer eggs for spring. My hens have stopped laying for the time being and I am not hatching (except for my eggs from you

), so that pretty much locks me out of participating for the time being

, but I will be lurking. I have claimed a couple of offers for spring eggs, but will keep that to a minimum - claiming only what I can afford not to get. It's not that I don't trust that those who are offering them will make it right if they are unable to fill with the specific breed, but as you mention, crap happens.

i agree with kytinpusher

I understand as well. I have offered a few eggs for spring but not too much that I know I won't be able to make right on if something happens to my birds. I think I have 2 dozen eggs for spring spoken for now and I will only go another dozen. 3 dozen is easy to make good on whatever happens.

And if all goes as I plan your eggs will ship Sat. Lets see how the hens behave. I just shipped herducks yesterday and then I am caught up. I learned the hard way last year...promised out eggs and the stinking rooster dropped dead.

Now I keep a backup rooster.

Myself personally I will have to either offer each person alternate eggs or paypal. I also keep a back up roo and an duplicate flock of some of my breeds at a friends house. I also have at least 8 breeds that I haven't offered yet that are at my friends house as well that I can pull eggs from.

BHep makes a great point, I urge everyone offering and claiming Spring eggs to consider.

Oh, hey, I think that's my "Mine", :D .  You've sent them? Yay!  I hate this not getting email updates!  Now I really get why you other folks were so annoyed with it.  I'm so far behind the ball on all my threads, grrr.  It's my only social outlet at the moment (how pathetic is that?), and I'm missing swaps.  :rant

How the heck do you know if you have fertile eggs right away by candling?  I'm still getting schooled on bad air sacs....

I would LOVE to claim/swap chicks!  I'll hopefully have American Onagadori, Nankins,  lemon/citreon Sablepoots, Khaki Campbell ducklings, Narragansetts, and really hopefully, project lemon/citreon d'Uccles to offer come next Spring.  Sigh.

Crazychickenlady, I have one d'Uccle egg looking really good here around the 14th day!  Might not sound like much, but after getting so many clears, I'm excited.  :weee None of the turkey eggs did anything and had to be chucked.  I truly think my problem is how far west I am.  I'm pretty much located at the far upper left-hand side of the lower USA, and my eggs don't come through shipping well at all.  It's distressing, but still I get hopeful and excited every time I get one of those "fragile" boxes....

I am not yet certified NPIIP but have looked into it and definitely am going to do it before next Spring.  Still building my pens and finishing the nighttime coops and don't feel ready yet.

Ugh, sorry for blathering on - I want my notification emails back!  Whine.....

I'm not sure about seeing if eggs are fertile but on the duck eggs I'm talking about. When my friend's wife washes them it can push bacteria into the egg and it will turn black in a few days so they need to be pulled so they don't explode. You can tell them right away instead of being clear with veins they will be cloudy. I try to toss all the washed ones and send only "natural" ones for swap. Out of the 6 dozen I set I did find 2 in my batch so I thought I'd better warn everyone who got eggs just in case I missed one.

I think I am going to start double boxing eggs going all the way West and see if that will help you West Coasters out on hatching rate.

I have claimed a few spring eggs. i am willing to take a little risk so I can get such great breeds. But I understand something could happen and I would be open to alternates, i think you just have to be a little bit of a gambler, and a bit flexible. I know crazypetlady has other breeds I would beintrested in if I could not get the ones I claimed for some reason. I am using my swap page to keep track of everything. I have all the eggs owed me listed, and I am keeping track of when I receive them. It is probably the first time I have been this organised in my life!!

I am horribly disorganized most of the time!!

I had one serama chick hatch night before last and none of his buddies hatched with him. My silkies are 2 1/2 weeks old and I am afraid to put him in with them. Is there anything I can do for this poor little chick? He is very lonely! I have left him in the incubator with food and water, I was worried with no buddies he might get too cold in a brooder.

Do you have any hatcheries near you or at least close enough to drive. You could pick one or two up. Maybe someone in your area have chicks. Local livestock auction's. Sorry those are all the options I have available to me. Good luck. Oh you can also but a stuff animal with it.
