I should change my avatar, also. I haven't had that guy for months!

Would you recomend becoming npip before shipping live chicks? How would I know which states require entry permits? Thanks again.
Somebody should get intrigued/motivated enough to research or at least start a spreadsheet so other people could help fill in info by state. It'd be a handy guide to have!

I've shipped older birds. This will be my first time shipping day olds. Someone needs to write up a Shipping Day Olds for Dummies guide, from setting the eggs to shipping the chicks.
YES!!! PLEASE!!!

Oh, I am so happy for you, kraftyladies!!! That's wonderful!

Thanks, I was very upset. I have had temp issues with that darn incubator, but apparently eggs are alot more forgiving than we think. That incubator has fluctuated ALOT, and they are still going. But after all, I am sure the broody hen hasn't been totally perfected by science, right? And how does a broody increase her humidity, I really want to know!

Sorry your chicks didn't make it!

I lost 5 out of my hatch that were fully formed. They either pipped internally but never progressed or were completely turned the wrong way in the shell and couldn't pip.
My basques last hatch all looked like they got their heads stuck under their wings and couldn't get them up and around to pip or zip. Did I shrink-wrap them and that's why they couldn't move?

Didn't catch up on the thread yet but wanted to update they got the power back on. I think they were only about 5-6 hours without power so should be ok. Gonna look into generators for the future though!!
Oh yay! I hope everyone's all right :)

I know how you feel. this morning as we were doing our morning chores my husband said that the eggs were alone...no broody. I told him that was okay, that getting up to eat and drink and stuff was normal. but then he said...no, she's freeranging with the others. she'd abandoned the eggs! so I called a friend and she drove her new bator over and while getting ready for a new years day party at my house, I also set up the bator and tried to warm the eggs back up. no time to test the bator or get the temp right or anything.

I put them in a cooler for a while with a heating pad over top of them, but now I am worried that it was too hot. garsh...I really did everything wrong. sigh. and the partygoers showed up and all I could so was deal with that...so it will be a miracle.

I haven't read up on this ...I thought the broody would be handling this. I feel like the father reading the how-to baby book while the mom is screaming in labor...

on the stressed-out, nervous dad image! And yep, I am really hoping for some good broodies too -- although I adore watching them hatch! Still at 5, with a sixth busily zipping, yay!!!

You were the one I was saying YAY about the eggs being ok! And yes, eggs will take what a broody does to them - gets off and leaves them, goes out and dusts herself, wanders around and eats, drinks and.. well

Um, if you really want to know, stick your hand under one. I did once, to take out new laid eggs, and there are no feathers under there, and I swear that bird dribbled water on herself! Warm, damp, chicken skin - ewwww....
