It really was not for THRIFTY sake... it was just PERFECT for shipping eggs, so why let it go to waste???????????  Happy accident.

BTW.... I found an add on CL for some FREE Packing material..... not what I thought but I got as much as we could fit in the truck.... I will get a picture of it.  I am going to use it for nesting material.  It is the straw (but not straw) looking stuff they use to ship stuff in big crates.... PERFECT nesting material.  They can't really kick it out either, it is kinda woven together and hard to pull apart.  I can't wait to start using it!  I have enough to last a few years.  LOL  It was a box on a pallet that was about 5 ft tall and 4ft x 4 ft square and we filled the bed of the truck with more from another box, mayb 1/3 of another box.  HUGE pile in the back barn with all the free pallets.... got to save money where you can with these chickens or they can't afford their feed. ;)

Be careful if that stuff is from china it has all sorts of chemical s in it.

Quote: They styrofoam? I don't think so..... Pretty sure the bubble wrap is fine, it is a name brand in ENGLISH.

Sorry I just re-looked at that and you are talking about the packing stuff..... I will look on the box...... Thanks.

I'm full of questions this evening, and since page 1 says I can talk about anything (within reason I suppose)...I'm posting them here:

Has anyone purchased Ameraucanas or Chanteclers from John Blehm, and what have your experiences with those chickens been? Pictures?

Has anyone tried Manna Pro's "Chick Grit" (insoluble crushed granite) with your chick(en)s and if so, would you recommend it to others?

I saw a "Chick Treat" block at TSC (no clue what was in it, I didn't look and I didn't buy it). It's made expressly for baby chicks up to a few weeks old I think. Anyone?

What time do you put your chickens in for the evening? IE: what is their "bedtime"?

Are chickens okay without food and water from bedtime to 7am? I'd rather keep food and water out of there completely during the night if it's fine for the chooks...I don't want itty bitty mice creeping about.

Thanks =]

I'll only comment where I have experience as opposed to conjecture, LOL.

Most of my chickens head in as soon as it starts to get dark. Anyone that hasn't gone it, is put in and the doors are closed.

My chickens are locked up without food/water until they are let out in the morning. It keeps their coops cleaner/drier.

Love my Blehm Ameraucana bantams. Sweet, beautiful birds.

My birds go to bed on their own at dusk. I just go in, check them over, take a head count and close up the coop for the night.

I bought some chick grit, but I put my younguns in grow out "tractors" so they have access to the ground at around 4 weeks or so, and our soil is sandy, thus they have a source of natural "grit" so I no longer add it to the feed. So far they have been ok.

I have also bought the chick treat, they love it but it seemed to give them runny poops so I stopped doing that. Instead I give them all the good scraps before they go into the compost. I do buy the dried mealworms which they go bonkers for.

Mine aren't going to bed on their own at dusk, I put them to bed around 8pm every evening. They fly up to the stabilizers in the outdoor run and sleep there around 6pm. I just leave them there and let them until around 8pm and then I go out there, and just pick them up and put them inside. Is there a way I can train them to go *in*side when it's bedtime? It's been so nice here lately that I can't say I blame them for wanting to stay outside, but I hope they don't do that when winter really hits.

The circled red parts are where they fall asleep around 6pm. Mainly they use the two by the door because those are wider than the ones on the sides.

Thank you for the mealworms tip. I bought them some fresh ones at the pet store (they have them in a big aquarium) and the chicks love them, but seem to have a hard time getting them down their gullets. I'll try the dry ones, I think those might be easier for them. Runny poops doesn't sound pleasant so I think I'll scratch the idea of the chick treat block. lol Thanks everyone. :)
