The feed we get is $30.00 for 22 lbs.

(but we have very few chickens - not hundreds or even 10 yet)
What are you feeding those birds

I thought lettuce was "zero food?" I thought there wasn't anything good/nutritious in it for them... but I don't have any sources to back this up, so I'll shut up now

I don't really have any sources here either but just my general knowledge, I would think that would be true if you were feeding them iceberg lettuce for example...the green leafy types would be much better, green leaf, red leaf, bib, etc.

do I want to admit it but I pay $28 per bag for organic layer feed and scratch. (ducks head and hides) hey...it's a local company and I like to support local!

It's H & H Old Fashioned - we only have a small amount coming, but that's basically to humor hubby...we'll order the full sized bags (22 lbs) after he's played around with the small. They have MFA currently, which was cheap and in all honesty I just don't like it. I looked at the website for it, and it said what the ingredients are, along with a "may differ depending on location" disclaimer, and I didn't realize until after I looked at the actual tag on our specific bag how crappy it is (for this area anyway). So I decided to go with something else... H & H really fits the bill with regard to what I want to give them.

I don't have a garden (yet) and I don't even trust the produce at the grocery store for us (we rarely eat anything healthy through the winter because the farmer's market is down during these months) so we eat healthy stuff the rest of the year when it's open. lol! (I'm planting a garden this next season and I'm pretty excited about it).

I know, right? It's because I live in an rural area adjacent to some very developed suburban areas and there is only ONE feed store basically so they can pretty much charge whatever they want. I had NEVER seen grass hay for $12/bale until I moved here and I nearly had a heart attack!!
holy crap!!! I would have, too!

pysankigirl, if I could afford it, I would too! I vastly prefer organic to knowing I'm eating whatever they spray their grains with...
yeah, but I sat out there watching them eat their organic scratch while munching on a bag of Cheetoes. I gave some to the goats...they liked.

Maybe it's like potato chips for them

They sure do love lettuce!

Lettuce is mostly water and cellulose, so you're right -- there's not a ton of nutrients. However, good, organically-grown lettuce grown on good soil does have quite a few minerals and so forth. The stuff you buy in grocery stores? Not so much. Mostly it's because the soil in most commercial farming fields has been depleted so badly, and only a handful of nutrients needed for plant growth (nitrogen & potassium, mostly) are re-applied in the form of artificial fertilizers.
