Quote: I have a sphynx cat and a hairless dog

Do you have to bathe them regularly? I've heard you need to do it for skin care and keep them covered in sunscreen/lotion.

Deb Yep more the cat then the dog when it comes to baths, the cat produces a lot of natural oils that would normally get wicked away by hair so he will get a sticky greasy film on him that dirt sticks to like crazy and he doesn't lick himself clean because he doesn't like the feeling of his prickly tongue on his skin. He leaves these brown grease spots where he lays and his ears get super dirty on the inside again because no hair to keep the dirt out. He also gets his butt wiped so he doesn't get a ring around it LOL.. Both the cat and the dog wear sunscreen in the spring/summer
Yeah, I was interested in a sphynx (I like the look), until I read about all the upkeep. I wasn't so sure about that, I already have so many lives dependent on me now. You'd think there'd be less upkeep on a naked cat, LOL My first two show dogs were a Maltese, then an Afghan. Then I swore no more longhairs. My son tried showing long haired cavies for a while (Peruvian, Silkies, Texels, Coronets), that even was too much!

I have to admit I am one of those that has yet to send their gift. I have an item I want to include that has to "process" for a while before it is ready. I hope to send mine out tomorrow, and I hope my wonderful person will forgive the delay. On a similar note this is a reminder that items should go out by Saturday. If you have not received your item or a DC number, please PM me, and I will check on them. I actually am hoping I am the only one left that has delayed this long, and I do beg forgiveness of my person. [SIZE=10pt] [SIZE=10pt]

I am in the same boat. One of the items I am sending has to go through several stages and I have been working on it. I should have everything finished tonight! Apologies to my person as well...it's really coming! :) Brandy

While you're at it, come on down and help me with the..oh six or so..that I need.  I'll treat you to some Cajun cooking or Southern Fried Catfish, your choice.

I think from the looks of the swap over the last couple of months that there are a bunch of us that will need to pens and very forgiving spouses.  :lau

Hey! Are you originally from Cajun country?

So I have this one white rock hen who lays REALLY BIG eggs. How big, you ask? Well...

(that's a quarter)

She's the momma of all the home-brewed half breeds I've hatched so far. Daddy is a very large and very fertile cuckoo marans roo. I've been hatching them hoping her offspring will inherit her performance -- absolutely enormous eggs, 5-7 days a week. Plus they're cute! They look just like cuckoo marans :) The oldest ones are now about 16 weeks, so I'm hoping by the end of January I'll start seeing some eggs from them.

I've been trying to find out whose genes control egg laying frequency, size, and coloring, mom or dad -- or whether it's a mix of the two. I know with the SBELs you put an Ameraucana roo over white egg layers, and the color gene gets passed to the daughters. Does dad's chromosomes control egg size, too? Does anyone know?

It'd be so cool if the daughters keep mom's egg size, but also inherit dad's coloration. Could you imagine dark-dark brown eggs that size? How cool would that be?

Had to take another shot of that egg. Her eggs are consistently allllmost this large, but this was the grandaddy egg so far since she began laying again after molt:

And sitting on top of the (perfectly respectable-sized) barred cochin eggs I just got Monday:

..... and while Im posting, I'm going to whine. Because there are not many people I can tell this story to.

yesterday I happily set my NYD hatch eggs 6 dz trader joes fertile eggs, 47 of mine and swaps from the pp/HE swap. Stuck them in the incubator took my pictures and went on my merry way. Go out to check the temp and notice its a little low, will have Mario check it out tonight.

While eating dinner he looks up and says " I wonder if the eggs are turning too far and will fall off" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE RAN out to look, and sure enough, I have 119 eggs plopped down on the bottom. many unfamily friendly things were said, and I carefully took them out one by one to see what could be saved.

I saved 2 icelandics, about 12 marans and olive eggers( those eggs ARE stronger then others! its true) , some of the small eggs from my other swap, but no arkansas blues or silkie eggs or Sumatra's. I am going to get more tj's eggs today and refill. We put a bungee cord up the front to hold everything together so the trays wont slip. I think it must be a known problem because there are 2 little holes on the metal on the top and bottom of the turning rack for hooks. This is what you get for not having a manual or many people around that still use these incubators. Luckily I found a thread of a few people with this model and we are trading facts. I'll be posting over there next. ( and the NYD hatch thread, there are people trying to guess my hatch rate, I'm going with low)

Oh no! I am so sorry!

Chiqita, that's miserable! I'm so sorry! Thank you for posting this, though -- I've never used egg racks before and after reading your story I set them on the kitchen counter, loaded them up, and did a test run in a safe environment before sticking them in the incubator. Which went fine, luckily, but it never even would have occurred to me to test them f you hadn't written that. So thank you -- but UGH! What a horrible thing to have happen!

Yay! Eggs are finally set :) Still need to clean up from the construction process, run things out to the barn, check on chickens, post egg pics... Frankly all I really want to do right now is take a nap :p

I cannot even vaguely imagine trying to hold one of my cats still long enough to put sunscreen on it! :gig

That's great news!
