Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

(I am going to post this both here and in the chat thread because I want the most possible people to read it. (selfishly, it is in my best interest!))

Okay, so thanks to Spitfire and her contact at the Virginia Department of Agriculture, I have gotten some info cleared up about the importation requirements for eggs and day-old chicks for Virginia. Evidently you don't need approval for each shipment, just one blanket approval that is good for the whole year to ship into Virginia. (adult birds are a different story)

Here is what she wrote:

"For people in other states to ship to you:
1. They need to have a poultry approval number, all mail order hatcheries already have this, and a lot of smaller hatcheries/individuals have it also. It is very easy to complete if your shipper does not already have it and like I said you only have to apply once and the number is good all year.
2. The shippers needs to be NPIP certified OR Birds need to be Pullorum tested within 30 days and AI tested within 14 days, and both of those tests are common to the poultry industry and easy to obtain."

If anyone has any questions, I can send you the forms and her contact info via e-mail (PM me!) and I will keep a list of who I am allowed to claim from and provide it to other Virginians when required.

Thanks to anyone willing to do this!
You are brilliant!

I am NPIP but where would I get the poultry approval number
I had the NPIP vet here Monday. He gave me a carbon copy tear off sheet---the approval number is on top of that. What that means is that the NPIP person has to come again to verify what you are sending to VA is clear--vet will sign off on the carbon copy tear off sheet, then you can send it in to VA to be cleared to send birds there for a year.

BTW--mods okay with my swaparoo this morning? Cleared to go again? That makes 1 side swap and 5 on the thread for me. Now if my roos would just start to get busy understanding their jobs around here, I may have eggs to offer. Buggars!

she said that you fill out a form and send to the Virginia poultry people and they give you an approval number valid for the whole year!

I didn't get the impression that they had to come back out...i thought you could fax it to them and they could just sign it and mark off what testing they'd done and send it back but I could be wrong...

here is the form

Ah, I was discussing Texas with my vet--as they are strict there, too. He told me quite emphatically not to ship or carry anything over to Texas without him first needing to re-inspect what is being sent the first time I send there. Then he would sign off on the form--a VS form 983. I assumed it would be the same for other states that have tougher guidelines, too.

Good to know VA could be done easily. Isn't CA tough, too?

well, I am assuming also that people have been AI tested (Avian Influenza, not Artificial Insemination...LOL), which evidently some NPIP people havent?
