Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

I'm watching my mixed eggs over on the RBA site. That and my mother has signed herself into my eBay account and purchased 2 dozen auctions for card stamps, ink, card stock, ribbons etc. She couldn't remember how to sign into hers..even though I taped it to the bottom of her laptop.

so whatever..... Need to make more eBay sales and pump up that egg money though!

I just had a customer contact me regarding chicks sold to her early in the fall, these were sold straight run as they were from hatched eggs. 5 of the 8 turned out to be roos. Does anyone have a "canned" response for this when they are contacted? I mean, its obviously more than 50% but I have no control over these things.

I would simply reinform her of the fact that she bought straight run which means as they are layed/hatched and the chickens control that which is out of your control and that is why you sell straight run.

I had someone come back last year to bring back a rooster I had sold them because they couldn't have roos, I had told her we would take it off her hands if it was a roo, she thought I owed her 2 chicks to replace her roo so I gave it to her. The roo turned out to be my nicest blrw so now he is my breeder

I'd have to point out that it's not a guaranteed 50/50 split. Each chick has a 50/50 chance of being male or female, but we all know families that have all boys or all girls. Like mine. My parents wanted all boys. They got all girls. Same deal.

Yes, I tried to state that nicely to her in my reply. Thats great about the BLRW roo!
When I sell straight run, they're straight run, I don't offer to take back, they're taking their chances as hatched. This is the first time I've had anyone say anything to me.
I do order hatchery pullets as well to sell at swaps and I let the customers know that its 90% guaranteed by the hatchery, they are taking a 10% chance of getting a roo unless they are choosing a sex-linked breed. The few that have asked if I take them back as they aren't allowed in their area I tell them I will. However I also let them know that although I take them back I don't issue exchanges or refunds, I am taking them back in order for them to avoid trouble with their town. I also let them know that I have very few customers looking specifically for roos and that most likely I will grow them out to go to freezer camp. I then suggest to them that if they want their roo to go to a "pet" home they may want to try to list them on CL before bringing them to me.

I just wrote down a list of the the breeds I have, eggs and chicks I have coming, and the only breeds I will allow myself to buy. Sigh. It's sad because mostly I am all set, however, I will overshoot the number of eggs with each breed so I can cull for best of breed and for the rooster/hen ratio that, ahem, some people don't understand... Lol.

yeh thats what I tell them, she had spent several hundred dollars was a new customer and I figured I could clarify next time to everyone. He was going to be supper but he is so gorgeous. Just put my first eggs in the incubator from his one lonely hen. Now the work to breed a new line off of his chicks to the roo he replaced and back and forth and so on and so on.

The ducklings will be straight run, but i will sex and mark them so you know what you are getting.

Celtic, I like the way you worded that! keeping that over in mind, had a lady do the same summer. but she wad ok with it since I told her it was a jackpot of what you will get...she bought six and 2 were roosters...i think that's a prey good ratio lol
Thanks, glad you liked it

I would be careful taking back as you dont know how they raised them, how many "other" birds they picked up and added, and what you could be exposing your flocks to. BIO-SECURITY major red flag
