I went and checked on the broody hen, and there was a fluffy blue copper marans sitting under her

one of six that I am hoping will hatch from Donna.
This is my first broody hen. I have a few questions. It was 45 this morning, they are in wood coop, this is her first brood... Should I leave her the hell alone? Or should I take the chicks and put them in the brooder? I closed off the coop so the other chickens won't be able to get to the chicks, and I would love to see what a chicken mothers natural instincts are, but I am nervous about it

I would say leave her alone, unless you notice that she is ignoring or picking on the chicks. Both of my first time broodies are doing great - but I have seen some of my mothers birds pick on a baby that isn't the right color. If you take the chicks away she will be very upset... Just keep an eye on all of them. That was a good idea to close off the coop, just until she can finish hatching the chicks. After they are all hatched you can open it back up and see how the other birds react. Some do very well - some are mean...

I'm very frustrated trying to set up AI testing here in Louisiana. The NPIP program includes testing for pullorum, but AI is separate. The cost is not bad for the actual testing ($2.50/bird for 10% of the flock), but there is only 1 lab in the state that does the testing. They require that the blood be collected by a licensed and accredited veterinarian, but there are no vets anywhere near me that I have found that will help. I could bring them to LSU to the vet school, but they would charge me an exam fee for each bird! The lab offered to draw the blood there for an additional service fee, but it is a 4.5 hour drive one way!

The real kicker is to have NPIP certification for AI, the flock has to be tested every quarter! I would really like to get the AI certification, but this is all ridiculous. Any ideas anyone?

Good heavens!!! Okay, that seems a little strenuous and extreme to me. I wish I had a single suggestion, but I don't.

And yes, the foam pipe thing was seriously cool! I took pictures, so I'll upload them in a bit here -- still have a car to unload and five bags of chicken feed to haul to the barn, yeech! I had coupons, though -- I figured I should use 'em up

If its warm in both areas I say go for it. My final total is 12 of 30 losses from a shipment 1 week ago from this hatchery but its cold up here. I sell hatchery stock at swaps to support my "rare breed" habit. I use Ideal regularly in the Spring and Summer though and they've done a good job. Around here people like bantams but straight run is a concern. Customers only want pullets, either large foul or bantam. I don't know of any hatcheries that will sex bantams though. If you've got the market and are going to sell them at day/week olds you're good. If you need to grow them out to separate the boys from the girls maybe not so much.

I was wondering what folks did with their "extra" chickens! I might actually have some extras by spring So far I've just put the extra Meyer hatchery stock I decided to sell off to make room for swap thread chickies on craigslist -- probably for a lot cheaper than I should have, but what the heck

I thought they might since silkies (believe it or not) sell for $15 to $25 apiece at auction.

There is an auction house about an hour and a half from me that last year(i didn't go to many hands in the fire)

was getting 35-50 each for RIR and Buff Orpington hens. I try to get 30 each for regular layers but 35-50

How's the flu in your area? They are dropping like flies in my office. We have 7 managers in our accounting dept. We have had auditors in this week. One of them found out he had the flu the day after he got here. We have had 3 of our 7 managers leave today with the flu. I said we needed to put quarantine tape on the elevator doors and staircases to keep the other departments from getting out on our floor.

You're welcome................and thanks! That was my entry in the invention contest last year for NYE. It won and I got some little prize. This year, the prize for first place was a Brinsea incubator...........................I guess I came before my time, LOL

But it certainly has made shipping easier, quicker and cheaper (and apparently more secure).
