I've got eight turkey eggs in the bator. Seven are developing, one might be late (everything is a little behind). I told G and he laughs and says, "and you were worried that Hoover wasn't doing his job and we wouldn't get enough poults." Well, I had four in before and the only one that froze didn't develop. But Hoover isn't very graceful about breeding, he takes forever. But he is getting them bred. :) I'm looking at more hens. Someone has a bunch of bb turkeys for $10 each, full grown. If I can get more hens, especially at that price, I'm going to. They'll have quarantine time to get ready for laying if they aren't already.

So I had an epiphany on my way home from town today. I've been trying to figure out how we're going to put in these new pens for the new breeds I'm getting. Most of my pens are big, really big. After thinking about it and window shopping at TSC, I now know why breeders keep quads of breeds. They take up less room. Do I really need 6-8 hens to a rooster? Nope. I think 3 hens is fine for breeding. I can add one or two layers for eating eggs if need be. So I decided we're going to use 10x10 dog kennels for pens. That should be big enough for 4 birds. I'm getting one heavy breed this year and they will get one of the big pens. We are also going to use pallets to build the coops this time. Why not take advantage of the free wood on CL. Now I just have to figure out how many more pens and where I'm going to put them.

Is a 8x5 pen big enough for 4 bantams????

For mine, I was thinking about doing cages on the walls of a shed for the bantams, with a small "run" on the outside. More like a balcony cage. I don't think I'm comfortable with trios. I have two blue egg layers, and only get one egg per day, sometimes skipping a day. Plus if one moults or something else happens... I'd rather have a whole fock of each breed, lol. Then again, I'm a hoarder, lol. One is never enough of anything. Three is uncomfortable and five or more makes me secure and comfortable. Hence why G makes fun of my 90 something pounds of flour. I figre if you have the space and time to keep everyone healthy and happy, more is better. But if it becomes a chore or they aren't getting enough attention, then sell off a breed or two. Or just hire a farm hand, lol.
