I have 78 developing to hatch this weekend  I plan on keeping 30-40 hens, so I can easily ship up to 80 eggs at a time... I am
Nervous about hatch though, since quail babies are more sensitive, and I can't have them inside (still haven't told my husband I have them ) I have 20 adult quail right now but the suckers just aren't laying. I have vent sexed the A&Ms which I was going to keep but I think all but one are male . Guess I have some butchering to do.

Morning all

I just checked my weather for today, it is currently 1 with a wind chill of -19. I moved chickens into the garage last night. I am thinking of adding a heat lamp for the ducks for the day. They were coated in ice when I put them in the coop last night.

DH gave the go ahead on a new hatcher this weekend. So we have on order a 5 drawer version of the hatcher below. We can use it for incubating goose eggs and just hand turn them daily. I have turn the goose eggs now, so its not a big deal. These are made here in FL by a fellow BYC'r, info is below for anyone interested.

I've got 60 quail coming from Sahwithchicks, and am looking forward to it. I'll decide next fall if I want to over winter breeding stock, or just restock each spring. Depends on how good they taste! I've not eaten domestically grown quail; just wild ones.

I spent some time this weekend going over what I've got here and what I've ordered for chicks and eggs, and have figured out that I will have everything I wanted soon....plus some. So now, unless something really awesome comes up, I won't be claiming much other than some repeats of a few things. Maybe some more Silver Sussex, and certainly more golden cuckoo marans. And I'm always up for more English Orpingtons. I'm learning the hard lesson that even if I can afford to get everything....I can't. I don't have the time or energy to care for everything. Affording something isn't always about money. Sigh.

Well really, you should replace breeding stock every year with quail anyway, and they don't lay well very winter unless under lights. Come October of next year I will give away or slaughter this bunch instead of keeping them over winter. I haven't had any problems with my quail, but I wouldn't have hatched my current group in September if I had foreseen they wouldn't lay me anything yet, even being four months old. I did sell quite a few trios though, and I think I got left with a LOT of males.
