I have had a hard time getting the oats to sprout. The wheat and BOSS sprout much better and easier. I add just a little oats and BOSS into my wheat for a little variety. You have to rinse the oats much more frequently because it turns thick and soupy.

oh wow Oh, I missed alot I bet DH's dad can tell us a bunch of ways to get stuff to grow. He is a 90 y.o 3rd generation farmer, DH is a 4th generation farmer, the whole, well most of the reason we moved from California to Indiana is to take care of mom and dad and be able to keep them living independently on the farm im the Spring Summer and Fall, in the Winter they Vacation at our house.lol and keep shoving dad up on that tractor every Spring and setting him loose in the fields

Well we pretty much blew it yesterday when we didn't go with mom the ER in the ambulance to the hospital yesterday. We thought she was "faking it" to get a vacation from taking care of dad. When we called the hospital at noon they said she was stable and not to rush down. By the time we mosyed on down to the ER after stopping to buy chicken food we get to the ER to find out she had a massive stroke.

they didn't even tell her DR they told him she was having trouble slurring her her speach. not that she was STILL having a stroke and he had to order blood thinners. She tried to tell us that in the ER that they had done NOTHING and that she was dying and needed heparin. We of course told her she was not dying and she would be fine, before we knew what happened.She us alive and about to communicate with us. That is the best thing that her DR said was "miracleous" and that she might recover fully.

Yeah, I wouldn't plan on keeping the same birds year to year, but possibly enough to be sustainable. Depends on the winter care needed, I think. And it depends on how they they interact together. If I can keep my over wintered birds in one area so only increase my feed/water needs by one pen, that'll work. If I have to keep them in small separate groups, that's not so good. Summer breeding groups are one thing, but I must keep the winter chores down as much as possible.

I've got 60 quail coming from Sahwithchicks, and am looking forward to it. I'll decide next fall if I want to over winter breeding stock, or just restock each spring. Depends on how good they taste! I've not eaten domestically grown quail; just wild ones.

I spent some time this weekend going over what I've got here and what I've ordered for chicks and eggs, and have figured out that I will have everything I wanted soon....plus some. So now, unless something really awesome comes up, I won't be claiming much other than some repeats of a few things. Maybe some more Silver Sussex, and certainly more golden cuckoo marans. And I'm always up for more English Orpingtons. I'm learning the hard lesson that even if I can afford to get everything....I can't. I don't have the time or energy to care for everything. Affording something isn't always about money. Sigh.

Ditto here...went over what we re looking for.....barnevelders,Millie fluer d'uccles,jubilee orpintons,tolbunt polish,and more polish in general,of course we need more silkied ameraucanas. Sigh...and gotta figure out who all I owe eggs too...

I am sorry CPL. That sounds very stressful! I had a very bad experience with the ER down in fort Myers fl when we lived there. I was two days from my due date with the baby, and my son ate some seafood, and started having a mild allergic reaction. Puking and his lips where starting to get red and slightly swollen. Overall, if we had stayed home, he would have been ok... But he was just under being three years old and never had an allergy, so we went to the ER to make sure if it got worst, he would be taken care of. Well, the dr decided to put him on an iv with saline, benedryl, zofran (anti nausea) and a steroid. A serious cocktail for such a little boy. He had a dystonic reaction to something (scariest thing I have even seen) but thy kept telling me nothing was wrong with him and I needed to calm down. I had him in my lap when they started the iv, he started to twitch, first his leg, then his arm, then he started jutting out his jaw and slurring, he was twisting his hand and pointing to stuff tht wasn't there, andI kept saying that's not normal. Finally the doctor came in and casual mentioned he was having a dystonic reaction. They lied to me an said they hadn't given him anythig but benedryl so they claimed he was allergic to benedryl, but my husband (and my mom who had flown in to help with the newborn) all saw the nurse put other vials of stuff in the drip. They also said he would have been released earlier but because of my "hysterics" they where going to keep him longer. Exact words. I still get really angry about the whole thing. We went to my pediatrician the next day and he completely agreed with me, we even went to a neurologist to rule out seizures. It is possible that benedryl can cause dystonia, VERY rare since usually benedryl is used commonly to relieve dystonia. My pediatrician thought if he hasn't had benedryl in the drip as well, his reaction would have been a lot worst. He was convinced it was the zofran. totally sorry for hijacking, it just makes me angry. I have a ton of respect for those who work in the ER. It seems to me, though, that sometimes the nurses and doctors get so worn out and withdrawn from emotion that they stop listening to the patients. In our case, they wouldn't listen. CPL, I hope she makes a complete recovery and is feeling better soon. I am sorry she, and your family, went through that.
