-31 here this morning!

my husband is up in chicago right now and it wa s-18 with the windchill, currently -5. He's waiting to see if he is picking up another load there or heading south. BBBBBRRRRRRRR! makes me feel better for the single digit wind chill here now!

My 41 egg Little Giant has temp issues when my room temp changes too much. If I buy another incubator, which one should I get? Genesis? I do not want to spend more than $200 at this point, so a cabinet bator won't work for me. My DH even made one for me in a cooler, but it also tended to drop during room temp changes.

My humidity also worked well. Dry hatch, then I put it around 63 - 65 for hatching. Once they started it stayed around 70. But, two little bantam eggs tried to shrink wrap on me. Bator problem?

Suggestions?

Nat, you have made me soooooo thankful for my 19 degree morning. Thank you!

Btw...just curious but what do you have your home thermostat set on?

If it were up to my family it would be on 80! We have a forced air wood burner going full tilt right now which doesnt reach the whole house. We have a monitor heater for kitchen, laundry room, and hallway...husband turns it up to 70... I turn it to 62-64! Get a sweater and slippers on if your cold...then we have plug in heaters in bedrooms ONLY used in these times of extreme cold...-10 below we dont use them but -30 yah! Im not cheap by any means but when our electric bills are 800$ a month...DRESS WARMER! That 800$ includes my barn, the garage, and the cabin on our property plus my house...ths month I wouldnt be surprised if the bills total 1000$ We have two heaters in barn that helps the birds...at -30 It was 5 degrees in there! They were happy lol

Usually takes me until June to finish paying off the electric bills :p In Summer...all 4 bills wont total 300$

yes He is the man I bought all my Laced Brahmas from. He bought his directly from Dan Powell. Nice guy and stands behind his birds. He accidentally sent me 2 cockerels and a pullet instead of a trio and I asked him about it shortly after they arrived. He said he was sure he sent the standard trio but to let him know. Well they hit a certain point and it's real hard to tell until the cockerel sprouts up. Well, 2 cockerels sprouted up. I took pics and sent them. He said so sorry and sent a pullet roughly the same age that I had at the current time to mix with what I have! so now I have 4 cockerels (2 from Hatched eggs and 2 from what he sent) and 2 pullets!
Lovely birds!

He has a pair of gold laced brahmas up on RBA now.

Ugh! I wish I could do grown birds;( I promised myself day olds or eggs forever...Its the easiest biosecurity method I can keep :D

Do you ever put them up for swap? Or we could side trade ?

Morning all!! We're finally above freezing and the rain started again! whoo hoo! no more of the yucky dry cold or frozen fog. So glad I live here and not somewhere colder! I like snow, in small doses. Like once a year, to melt within a couple of days.

Look what came this morning! 44 bantam Cochin chicks!!!

Here is my breakdown...

9 black and yellow chicks. Probably mottled.
10 lt blue. I am thinking blue maybe self blue.
6 pale yellow. White
7 darker yellow/buff. They are buff and red. (I didn't realize they had both colors when doing my count)
3-4 that are a pale yellow with a bluish tinge. I have no idea what color they will be.....
4 silverish wild type. Either silver laced or silver penciled.
5 brownish black/brown wild type. I think they will be partridge.

They have the same special going on for next week. :)

Jealous!! I want some chickies! I have some coming in March and some hatching in 2 weeks. I hate waiting!

Holy Cow!!!!!

I usually keep mine at 60-65, however, I do sometimes raise it for a little bit.
Brrr....I keep mine at 68. I'm cold blooded though, unless it's like 85 outside, I'm freezing, even with multiple layers, extra socks and coats.

yeah, I had them up before Christmas and stopped as I didn't want to get TOO many. They are just pullets and all should start laying around the same time. Once those swaps are filled and I have hatched some more out. I may offer some more or put some eggs for sale.
I have those silver laced brahmas I just mentioned, 4 gold laced pullets and 2 gold laced roos, and a 2 buff laced with 2 buff roos.

ACK! I live in TEXAS for a reason...to think I was worried about my chickens when it was gonna be possibly below 30!

It was 69 yesterday I was wearing t shirt...for Christmas I was wearing shorts..lol dint get older here till after Christmas .

On a worse note...my GORGEOUS FBCM looks hideous...he is being pecked so bad and some other hens too....I am gonna find that witch that is doing it and put her in the pot with dumplin's on her! I am so mad...out of seven hens I'm gonna loose two...someone is laying a crappy RIR looking egg and then one is pecking...my rans are awesome and everyone is looking raggedy as. Crap because of one dang hen! I hope it's just one....any suggestions?! Before I cull them all and start over! The whole flock was gorgeous and glossy...fat and healthy...what in the world
