So I got my totes, at an absolute steal: $15 a piece. Got the plastic stuff for the kennels. And I had an epiphany while I was just in the basement. My DH's dog has a 300 gallon rubber maid stock tank that is her swimming pool during the summer. In the winter it sits empty. If I can get that in the basement my brooder issues are solved!!!! Getting it into the basement won't be easy and then heating it won't be either.

I am using plastic tubs and I have a heat light hung from the ceiling but I am hoping to convert soon to using a homemade "artificial hen" using reptile heating pad. The husband says it will pay for itself within a month from the energy consumption saved. I got an 11x17 one online for 30 bucks. Just have to see what kind of heat it puts out as to how high to make the legs

Thanks. You know Home Depot has 54 gallons for cheaper.

Walmart has them for $19.

I have a small one in my brooder. I have an Eco-glow 20, but with 20 chicks it gets crowded. I just lay it on the ground with a paper towel wrapped around it. (easy to clean and change) They lay on top of it and stretch out. You might not need to make a stand for yours.

Are you serious? Black side up?? I have the 50 and though I love it, it does get crowded under there. I may have to try this.

No, sorry, I have a small reptile warming pad I use in addition to the 20. They lay on the warming pad, they go under the 20. I've used seedling heat mats the same way. They only heat up about 20 degrees above the ambient temp - just keep that in mind if you're using it outside.

Well shoot, guess I won't try it.

I use a sterilite tub to start, then the big guys have a 6x8 tarp on the basement floor with boxes for walls. For clean up, we just move or replace the walls onto a second 6x8 tarp, then bundle the tarp and dump it out. Works really well actually.
