Have a couple questions...

When you guys introduce your younger ones into the main flock, how old do you let them get? Anyone have any tricks for transition? I recently put some lemon cuckoos in with no trouble, but the lavenders, well that was another story.

I let my chicks start foraging a bit when they are 4-5 weeks. We let them out with the big girls from the mixed flock and stay out with them. They stick close to us and we never have any issues. By the time we've been doing that for 2-3 weeks, they're all running amongst the big girls and I can safely leave them in the coop overnight. They always start out roosting with the bantams. :)

So got home and had fun washing skunky dogs.  but nothing is going to put a damper on my mood today.
I wish everyone else had had a good day because I know how annoying cheerful people are when you are having a bad day.

I got a call from the fellow I am meeting on Thursday to get my new Dorking Roos.  He is a guy who's been really into Dorkings for like 50 years and has been collecting them and trying to save them from all over the east coast for many years.  He's a really enthusiastic guy who I love talking to so just the call would have made my day.  But he also informed me that in addition to the two roos he's bringing me, he's also wanting to know my incubator size so he can bring me enough eggs to fill it up from his two best pens!!!  and he told me once they're grown he'd help pick the ones good enough to go forward with.

His colors are not the standard dorking APA SOP colors.  He's trying to collect and save some of the non-standard ones.  He has seen alot of the other guys into heritage Chickens die off and their familys didn't necessarily know what they had or who to contact to dispense of their flocks in the best way. Some flocks that took decades to create that have just gone to the meat processor and He has found out months afterwards that someone is gone and noone knows what happened to their chickens. And he has seen dorkings go from a popular breed to pretty rare and fears the loss of the genetics. So he says he's being a realist and admitting that we never know what could happen and wants to make sure his genetics are not all in one place.  So he's giving me eggs from his Slate-reds and a color called "Pyle" that I had to look up but when I did, I was thrilled!  so I am getting eggs and seems like a mentor as well!

:D

Wow! That is so exciting!!!

Yes B.C. do have a strong prey drive, all herding bred dogs do. BUT, most sheep herding dogs have very little bite instinct. (They don't want them eating sheep) So mine may try to herd the chickens on occasion, but I can leave them in with my chickens all day and never worry about them hurting one. Now cattle bred dogs have more bite to them, so can be more of a concern. And of course there are exceptions to every rule! I watched my dog nudge a chicken all the way across my basement floor.
yes there are ALWAYS exceptions. I have a terrier who wont kill a thing. Literally a mouse ran over him in the coop last night and all he did was joyously bark at it. I use him as a backdrop for chick photos he is so docile with them. The shelter thought he was a cairn too, but I just cant believe that, he is too much of a whimp.

That is good to know about border collies, I always thought they were on the be careful list, maybe its just the energy volume.
so sorry to hear about people losing their birds...I know it sounds corny but I am flighing high right now because my eggs are pipped and hatching and I want to draw everyone into my happiness. I wish I could.
NO shed your happiness upon us SHED I SAY!
Sorry about everyone's bad day/week. I am having the same.

Just found one of my oldest CL pullets dead in her pen. She seemed thin the other day and was not standing up, so it doesn't surprise me too much, but she was doing better.
Also, supposed to be shipping a Legbar roo to Mstricer and can't get into my USPS account!

:( Im sorry! It sounds terrible but when I see other good chicken keepers loose birds I feel less like I'm a horrible person. If we all loose girls I cant be that horrible of a mother!

Loosing a full grown laying hen almost made me think I should get out of chickens, they seem so sturdy. chicks are one things, predators are one thing, but just dropping dead should not happen! Someone should take this up with god. (j/k)
Ok trying not to panic. I have about 50 eggs that I put into lockdown a few nights ago technically due to hatch last night. Well the night I put them in the bator, long story short, got down to 95/96 degrees for about 6 hours. Do you think it could've stalled them or is it possible that it could have killed them? I'm not hearing peeping and have no pips.....

just keep telling myself to be patient.
They should just be slow, 95/96 shouldn't kill anything, much bigger tolerance in the down swing then up swing.
Speaking of Easter eggers, this is Pearl. She has inspired me to want to own, work with, and breed wheaten ams. She is my puppy dog chicken.
OMG cute chicken. So proud of herself.

I feel if I am going to have animals I need to expect losses, but it still hurts.
And a totally non chicken question. I am looking for Lionhead rabbits. I remember someone on here that had some, bred them, or something. I am hoping to maybe locate a pair and can pick them up during my trip in May.

I have a Lionhead buck, but haven't had any luck finding any does for him.

Good evening guys! I have a question for you all about our hatching eggs that have been incubating for 25 days now. THEY STILL AREN'T HATCHING!!! We are starting to get really worried and don't know what to do. I figured I would ask because you all hatch eggs a lot. What do you guys think? Should I be worried? How long should we go before we do anything else? What should the next steps be?
