Check out the penciled palms. They are gorgeous! You know that's not nice to show porters to turkey addicts. Heeheeheehee

OMG! I'm looking at everything to upgrade the sportsman to an electronic thermostat and I want to give up! One youtube thing said that I need a relay thinger, if I didn't have one, it wouldn't work, BUT he had a homemade bator, so maybe the sportsman already has one?!
Then, I didn't look, but how in goodness gracious sakes do I get into the back where all the wiring is? I'm afraid to tear it apart and then not know what I'm doing to hook it back up properly, then I won't have an incubator at all!

I took the top off my Sportsman - it looks like a spaghetti mess but its relatively straightforward. Your electronic thermostat has a relay, I think you would only need another relay if you have a really big motor to start - which the heating coil is not. Just make sure the relay in the thermostat can handle the draw of the heating coil (something I haven't gotten to yet).

Study the schematics before you take anything apart - figure out which wire goes where.. one will go to the electric in - one will go out to the heating coil. It has an extra set of slots/connections for cooling - but you won't use those. Once you are certain where everything will go - then you can take the top off or just follow the wires and replace one of the wafer thermostats with the electronic thermostat. I took the top off because I want to also sand/repaint it, I think its easier to see where everything goes that way.

If you want a picture of what mine looks like inside, let me know.

Yes, please, if you don't mind! Only replace one wafer?

Sure, I will go get them.

View from top looking down at both thermostats. The wires then go thru a hole into the back area where the plug comes in - all the connecters are back there.

This is looking at it from the other side of the 'bator. The wire comes in- goes to the top wafer, then a blue wire comes out and goes to the bottom wafer, then the red wire goes back into the back again.

This is a picture of the connections in the back - black is the incoming power, blue goes to the top thermostat, red I believe is to the heater coil.. Unfortunately they use the blue and the red wires for the turner too - so if you are back there make sure you pick the right wires.

You might have to unscrew the top back screws before you can take the lid off. You can also cut the wires from the inside of the 'bator and just use the two that come into the area you can get to - blue is power in, red is to the heater coil.

If you do decide to take the top off, buy a roll of thin window foam - the stuff you put around doors and windows to keep out cold air. When you take it apart you will find the old stuff there - best to have it on hand in case you tear anything or in case it needs replacing.

I understand the wafers are run in "tandem" in case one is stuck on the other will click off. Just in case there is a malfunction/spike with the electronic thermostat I was planning on only replacing one wafer. The other would be adjusted just a bit higher than the temps I want it to keep. However, if the electronic thermostat goes off - the other wafer wouldn't help.

Hopefully the Bator (and Pallet) Queen will drop by with what she did

- although I understand her son-in-law did the actual wiring she would probably know if he needed an extra relay - and you might not need to keep the other wafer. I am in awe of what she did with those cabinets, and the pallets.. all really amazing. It gave me hope I might be able to fix mine up with the electronics too - and I ordered mine and just got it in the mail today

Edited cuz I got confused on red/blue wires.. had to look again.

So annoyed and bummed. I bought 12 bourbon eggs from someone local and only 1 is developing. She said its my incubator. I cracked two and they're completely infertile. No bullseye. Just white and yolk. I sent we a picture and now she's saying that it could be anyone's egg! I don't like when people aren't willing to backup what tey sell. AND she still has a posting on CL. She said she'd sell me more but they're now 4/ea instead of 3/ea. I feel ripped off.

Is that your same incubator that just hatched 6/6 of my bourbons?
