Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

I finally sold my first batch of CCL eggs locally and it seems 5/6 started to develop however 3 have blood rings and only two are going into lock down tomorrow. I did a small test batch prior to selling and all hatched. I put 25 more into lockdown on 2/5 and all but two are developing nicely and will go into lockdown on Sat, one blank and one blood ring. As it was a local pick up I'm looking for possible causes for the difference in our hatch rates. The reason I have read was bacteria however I would think that if it was from here I would be getting a bunch more quitters. Thoughts and input would be most appreciated! Any other known causes for bloodrings/quitters?

Today will be a hard day for me. Hubbie and I are quitting smoking. I have quit before, but he always cave's and then I do too. I want to remain smoke free this time. I'm not using any gum, patches, or anything. My biggest reasons for stopping is health (mine and family) and wealth. I kind of do not see the point in buying gum or patches that cost more then a cheap carton or drugs that cost up to triple that amount. Anyway please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Congrats!! It is so incredibly hard, I know! I was a pack a day smoker for ten years, only quit when I was pregnant and had no problem doing so. However, I started smoking both times after stopping breast feeding, which was so dumb. I tried and tried to quit cold turkey, always ended up last three days and buying a pack. I used smoke breaks outside as an excuse for time to myself and away from the kids. I finally quit a few months ago by using patches, which where so incredibly helpful, and going out to the chicken coop for time away from the kids. I was addicted to the routine of smoking and failed to quit by the nicotine withdrawal. Using a patch stopped the urge to smoke so I only had to change my routines.

I'm hatching, I'm hatching

. I set six of my own chicken eggs at the same time that I set the scovy eggs from COF. I was completely surprised because I thought I still had three more days before I had to take them out of the turner. I didn't have my hatching incubator set up and so I have been up all night taking them out of the turner as they hatch. All six hatched out some adorable little OE's. I have two OE's that lay ENORMOUS eggs. They're normal sized hens, but they lay eggs the same size as my standard Brahma hen!


Good luck to you GabbleBabble. Don't use the gum, its as addictive as cigarettes, My sister inlaw has quit smoking, but now she has a two pack of guma a day habit. I don't know about the patches, they seem to offer less of an oral fixation, but my dad used Chantix and that hasn't worked for him, but my uncle used welbutrin and he said it was like magic, by the second week, he went to light up and just put it down..

I am home with my 3yr old who is sick and we are waiting for the last chick to finish pipping. If he doesn't stop shaking the incubator, I'm gonna strangle him (not really).

Oh my god, I just had a sneak attack! An egg that I didn't even see pipping just popped out a little yellow chick. That was fast.

My 1st thought.....a dirty incubator OR too much handling. Oils and bacteria from your/their hands can contaminate the eggs. ORrrrr.. just plan incubation, temps, humidity problems

Thanks guys. I have to clean all the brooder boxes, water dishes, feed pans, and my own house today so I should stay pretty busy. I really really want to quit this time, so I am hoping that is enough motivation to stop on my own.

Thanks for the link! Fumigation recommendations? I do not wash the eggs, they do not sit in the nests long as I collect several times a day and I've had very few with any visible dirt on them. They are set in an egg flat at room temp out of sunlight until I pop them in my incubator. I haven't been tilting them as I've read of some doing. Wondering if this can be caused by bacteria on the egg or perhaps bacteria in the incubator. I'm using a Hovabator 1588 which regulates the temps well but am not sure what she's using so don't know if the temps have been steady or spiked. I'm replacing the eggs for Easter hatch but I guess I'm trying to figure out if its something I'm doing (or not doing) with the eggs here or something that might be happening after they've left.

I actually got my 1st 2 Sebbie eggs Tues & Wed. I am going to try again, last year they laid but I had poor fertility and anything that started to develop quit on me. I am going to take COF's incubating advice....so wish me luck.

Let me know if you need any help at all. Be sure that gander and the girls have butt trims done so they will will make good connections

Its not your eggs if you get those rates. Its the person who bought them. They either are touchy touchy or dont clean their bator properly or a whole list of other things. When you test hatch and get excellent results you cant help someone who you dont have control over their incubating system.
