Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

For those who mix up a water/bleach solution for the incubators, how much do you use? How many parts of bleach per water? I have a 2qt spray bottle I intend to use. I'm HOPING it'll be safe to spray the bottom when I have eggs in the top (staggered hatches). I was using natural methods (acv and soapy water) and apparently they were still giving me issues. I can't get oxine yet, so I'm looking for a safe alternative for now. I did see some egg wash with potassium sorbate at TSC for $9, but was reluctant to spend the money on it, since I don't know enough about potassium sorbate and how well it works (it's combined with citric acid already). I already have plenty of citric acid...
I also have lye crystals, and I know they're used for disinfecting poultry barns, but wasn't sure if they'd be safe for a bator. :/

I finally got my chicks. Only a few are still alive but it's apparent they won't be for long. I'll be surprised if they make it through today.

I'm numb. I've been so excited anticipating getting these CCLs, and now this. All the grogel cups are empty and chicks are strewn about everywhere in the box, in the cups, under the cups, draped over the cups. OMG, what did the PO do to this box.

I'm so sorry. That is horrible!

I'm currently using 3 Genesis 1588's. They have always worked really well and keep temps great so I don't know why I'm having late hatches and late deaths :th

I have used the Octagon 20 in the past and it kept temps great but I needed more room and switched to the 1588's. Honestly, I just think it is to cold for shipping and that is possibly causing the hatch problems. Brinsea tabletops are usually very good ;)

That's why I bought the thing but this winter is giving me a complex....very discouraging lately.

Thanks everyone. I'm not having much luck stopping the tears. Over chickens. Hmmph. I have all my chicks shipped to DM because I'm always at work when they come. She does not have an incubator but I think I will invest in another one to keep at her house. But DM is holding them in her hands close to the light to try to warm them up.
Hot water bottles and heating pads! If she has empty code bottles fill them with warm water and set the chicks against them. I have a water bottle that I keep in the brooder with my quail for them to lean against or cuddle up to.

Should say Coke bottle.

ha ha! that was done on purpose, that's what my 10 year old said when he was around three...mommy you are really gettin on my nerds.
I about fell out, laughing...and it just stuck
That's cute! I love it when the kids come up with something and we start using it for ourselves. Maybe auto-correct actually has a bunch of 3 year olds at the helm?
