I don't know cluck...one of my RP hens will come running for hugs when I squat down and open my arms...just like my kids used to do and my grandkids do now

Oh if it were my kid and he only wanted turkeys we would be hoarding and grabbing every turkey swap we could. Certain individuals on here who shall be nameless would get a chance to get any of them. I loves me turkeys! Good grief I go out in a stinking blizzard to check them before I go to bed. Gotta have my good night hugs and cuddles.

Donna & Shellie - thanks again for the advice on the (badly) cracked egg. The wax really may have done the trick! The lil Dwarf is peeping at me! It's pipped internally, I'm just worried it will attempt to pip externally overnight and hit a spot with wax. Crossing my fingers. They aren't due to hatch until Friday, but those guys usually make an appearance a day early. Two of them have already pipped externally.

Yeah! Let us know the outcome please!

lol...ok that's better...don't know what to think of people that don't like turkeys, other than they must have never had one.

Yeah the mom is ok with her sons choice of 4H project. Same with her daughters. If they were my kids I would say what's wrong with my MIDGETS! but the kid likes the eye candy, and really there is nothing wrong with that. At least he likes turkeys. They are looking for something he can keep as a pet. Last year he raised BBB and of course couldn't keep them. That's the hardest part for kids.

I must BRAG. I got 14-16 eggs from Brookhaven for a side swap. I think she wanted to use me

anyway ALL arrived in great shape. First candling was a shock 14 eggs seemed to be going great. Then I tossed one later. 13 eggs made it to lockdown. 1 was iffy but what did I have to lose. Yesterday 2 babies had hatched a day early and 5 more eggs had pipped. This morning 10 babies

from shipped eggs! I have 2 that I didn't candle but left time in the hatcher just incase. I still had other chicks hatching too so I was not giving up. I will brag more if they hatch.

If she offers Blue Rocks (barred maybe) TAKE THEM you will not be disappointed!

awesome rippy! I hope my shipped hatches turn out that well

SEW!!!! YES you can breed OUT Dom white EASY. Genetics WL are Dominate White and they have 2 copies. When they are crossed with another NON WHITE breed they chicks only have ONE copy of DOM white. Dom white is an incomplete dominate so that is why the chicks have SPOTS it is leakage. When you breed the SBEL to another NON WHITE bird you will get HALF white chicks (basically same genetics as the SBEL) and HALF that are some colors. What that color is I can't tell you. Just depends on the cross that made the SBEL and the new Bird you crossed them with. Dom white is EASY to get rid of... if they are not white they don't have it

AND on your Barred SL EE..... same holds true for California Whites. They are a cross of a White Leghorn and California Grays I THINK. SO they only have one copy of dom white. The next generation will be half white chick and half colors. The barring will be passed on from the hens to the roos just the same. You just may not be able to see the spot at hatch on the white ones.

I am going to play with the California Whites and see what I can do to make some Barred EE too. Now that I am thinking about it, why couldn't you use a CCL to make Barred EE. OK I KNOW NOTHING about CCL genetics. Would that work? I have extra roos

Okay - So - I could use the SBELs to get a barred ee that lays really well? Awesome. Totally groovy.

I was thinking about getting some Production blacks (California grays) They're barred and lay white eggs. If I cross that with an SBEL, then 1/2 will be white, and 1/2 barred?

I think I can use CCL pullet to make black SL, since they carry the barring genes. I don't know how they lay, and I'm focusing on production....

ETA: Oh, duh, yes, I think you can use the CCL Roo to make barred EEs. The Roo would give the barring to both the girls and the boys. Hmmm more possibilties....

I don't know for sure about the California grays, but you might want to check and see if the roos are double barred. If so they would pass the barring to 100% of the chicks. The California whites are a cross and I think the roos only have 1 copy of the barring gene so they will not breed true, but I don't care I want barred EE LOL.
