You are lucky being in the south where you can build open like that!

I figured out today that my RIR hen has been pecking holes into my eggs. I was thinking it was the bedding, but I just caught her yellow beaked. I put some golf balls into the favorite nesting box (out if six choices, they all lay in one or on the floor

), to try to deter her. Any suggestions? I am killing my rooster tomorrow, should she be included? She is one of the best layers, but she has been breaking one or two eggs a day. Also, all the other girls are fat, but she has always seemed bony to me...not unhealthy, but not as robust as the others. She is a RIR, aka production red. Between her and Henry, this is definitely not a breed I will do again.

I have wooden dummy eggs and I just discovered my Ameraucanas are eating my Delaware eggs. I take my wooden eggs and toss them on the floor and watch everyone run and peck at it and kind of mosey away when it doesn't break. I do it again. I keep doing it until when I drop it, everyone stays away from it. They stay away from the eggs until someone is careless and breaks another one in the nest box again. It takes a good 5-10x but I don't want to cull a chicken for a reason that is fixable. Unless she just isn't your cup of tea... or coffee.

Wow! Those are some nice pens! Oh, and don't you know chocolate melts in heat? You should probably just pack all those chocolate Orps up and send them up here to Michigan to keep them safe.
