This is what a Cream Legbar chick should look like-female on left/male on right.

See the grey on the male? Unfortunately, the Legbars we have here in the US are not nearly as correct as they should be, which is why we are getting very dark males. We have to work with what is available, though. This picture is from Emily Degray in the UK. She has some of the top Legbars in the world.
Never hatched a roo that looks like that.... how can we breed to that if they roos are all dark?

I don't know how much we can blame the post office. I've found detatched aircells in my very own eggs before, and some of the side aircells. I actually have a detatched in the bator now. I didn't candle before setting. While they rarely develop, this one has, and the embryo free floats wherever it pleases. It'll be interesting to see what happens with it anyways.
I just don't understand why this time of the year seems to bring problems. It's been much colder and I've gotten better results. It's just weird. Maybe the weather has chickens off? Who knows.

Ok...some day, in my infinite free time

, I am gonna start a master abbreviation reference sheet. And just before that, I am gonna learn to write stuff down

better. In the meantime, what is BSL?

Uhm well I just got a box of CCL from Madamwlf. She double boxed, great insulation, eggs in a well-fitted small box inside a large F/R box. Eggs were in FOAM. The outer box had puncture marks in it, and 3 of 7 eggs were cracked. The box must have been forcibly thrown to do that. I 100% blame the USPS on that one. Box wasn't marked at all (marked ones tend to be targeted).

I double boxed and shipped 18 eggs to another BYCer last month. 7 of those eggs were cracked, and those only traveled 300 miles in the state of MT. One "Fragile" PS sticker on the top. The outer box was destroyed.

I have gotten boxes that have been obliterated while marked "Fragile/Hatching Eggs/Live Embryos/etc." Only once was it the packer's fault.

Quote: By culling hard and getting eggs from someone who has made improvements in their line. It will be a long road, but we are already seeing HUGE strides in just one generation. Greenfire may get a bad rap for some things, but they are really trying to help with what we have available. I haven't gotten any of the new line males yet, but my females are looking very nice-2, at least (maybe 3), from my four are very correct in their coloring. They also have much nicer crests.

I highly recommend following the "Cream Legbar" thread for anyone who is interested. The US SOP is not quite finished yet, but we have Walt Leonard (judge and Chairman of the APA) helping us to draft it with the proper terminology and he is also giving us advice as to what the judges will be looking for. Nicalandia knows a lot about genetics and has been helping us understand what to look for as far as color to keep the cream gene. Many of the Legbar girls from GF first import are gold in the hackles, where they should be silver (aka cream). The new line has better crests, combs, and color. Type is still being determined, and is proving to be the most frustrating issue-because nobody really has a bird that "fits" the British SOP for type yet.
