I have always heard if a hen crows it is bad luck.
Well, I'm not sure my luck could run much worse!

Quote: The plastic pipe will have the same problems as the 55 gallon drums if you lay it on its side. Too much condensation that can't be released causing black mold to start in the bedding very quickly. Add the black color for heat and you have a bacterial/mold factory to the nth degree. I would probably cut out big windows on the sides covered with hardware cloth either sew it on with bailing wire or cut the screen and drill holes to poke it thru the plastic and fasten it inside. It will make it not nearly as quick to get it done.... The arched roofing will still roll any moisture right down the sides and into the bedding. Not real sure how to fix that.. The other use standing up allows the condensation to escape out of that pie-pan roof.
Also- going from 66" to 48" makes it much smaller. You loose a lot of Pi that way.
My Sicilian Buttercup Bantams have gone broody on me. Two of the three are currently co-brooding in their elevated coop. I don't want to leave them their because of the hole in the floor. I'm afraid the chicks will fall through. Anyone have quick ideas as to a simple broody coop for a couple of bantam hens and chicks? They are sticking to the nest like glue so far, and both of them lightly peck me to express their displeasure with being disturbed. LOL
These are my first broodies and from the one breed I have that is NOT supposed to go broody. I'm sure the cause was the fact that the whole time we were at the Mayo clinic my daughters didn't collec tthe eggs. Every cage had over a dozen eggs in it which DH had to throw away. He was NOT a happy camper.
Do you have a dog crate? That worked great for me. I let the broody out once a day - but if I forgot she had far enough away from the nest to go poop without fowling (hah) her nest.
I was wondering about that. Do you just keep them in the run with your others, or in the barn by themselves or what?Do you have a dog crate? That worked great for me. I let the broody out once a day - but if I forgot she had far enough away from the nest to go poop without fowling (hah) her nest.
Lovely babies! I would recommend a second water bottle low enough for them, though. I don't think they can reach Mama's!
REALLY weird question... has anyone ever had a hen crow? My MF D'Uccle "hen"just crowed. It doesn't have any roo qualities, flirts with the roo, and is by all means a "hen", but I just walked in in the middle of her/it crowing...
Flocksalot, I could probably send you some barnevelder eggs.
