We get 7 1/2 dozen a day right now. Was more but I sold off a bunch. This is the kids little business. He pays for feed and treats for all the birds and the rest goes in his bank account with a little put aside for fun. Which generally equates to MORE chickens. I pay for housing and electric mainly because I'm an awesome mom. I help him do chores, treat injured, clean coops, and monitor health, but expect my son to be up on worming, health and pest. For a nine year old he does pretty good.
We don't wash eggs until they are ordered. We never sell anything over a week old because if they are there I set em.
Now that we've been playing with the genetics to get different colored birds the kid is now ready to expand into selling chicks, so we are currently collecting our breeding stock. He has a list of breeds that he wants and that's what I've been swapping for. Well some I just get cause they're pretty and I like them, but most are for the PLAN. He's quite the kid.
We will still keep many mutt layers as we provide eggs for a CSA and have many regular customers. But some of the focus will go towards specific breeds. He already has orders waiting for SFHs since we got the adults. I still need a few breeds and will also get several different lines of breeds for him, but yes we have a lot of birds. Farm livin is the life I tell ya!
