This might sound like a totally stupid question but if you have eggs from breed (fill in the blank) shouldn't all the eggs look the same? I understand some size differences but major color differences shouldn't happen right? I have eggs that I was told are all one breed but some are a dark brown and others are nearly white. Can this happen? Should this happen?

My Foley BLRW lay anywhere from an almost WHITE to a dark brown, almost as dark as my lightest Cuckoo Marans eggs. They do vary from chicken to chicken within the breed. Same with my AMs and Marans even.

Good to know, I had never had that big of a range in eggs and since I didn't really know the seller wasn't too sure.

Whee! Just finished setting up a stall for the chickies and got all my young'uns moved out to their new home. I've got my three month olds and my six week olds in together and other than a scuffle or two it seems to be okay. I'm so pleased! I'll have to do some thinning eventually, though -- as big as that stall looks at the moment, I suspect 38 full-grown birds will be pushing its capacity! Still need to build a run outside for them, but that can wait a few days. They've all been so cramped I suspect they're thrilled just to have room to stretch their legs (and wings!) a bit.

Now to clean up the kitchen, which is coated in dust and chick down. Then I get to have a clean kitchen for three weeks until the ones in the incubator hatch...

Are they Swedish Flower Hen? Then yes, it can happen. I wouldn't say I get dark, but med. brown to a light cream. I have to be careful that I don't get some of them mixed up with my BR eggs. Here is a picture I took earlier this year:

On the left is a fake white egg for color comparison. On the right is a BR egg. All in the middle are SFH.

Just a reminder everyone that signups for Secret Santa close the 15th. We have a really good turnout. See post 2223 for guidelines and post 2278 on page 228 for link to form.

Ooh that reminds me, I got a bunch of beautiful SFH eggs from KYTinpusher yesterday, they all got here in great shape and are in the bator now! Really lovely cream color.

Thanks Walli

I hear ya, DM! Seriously regretting having picked up as many hatchery birds as I did about a month ago... Well, kind of -- it's neat having a "sampler pack" of about 16 breeds/varieties, but at the same time I've really already got too many chickens. As it stands right now I've got 44 chickens, which is already ridiculous, with 13 eggs in the incubator right now, ack! Come spring I'm going to have to make some real decisions about who I want in my motley egg flock, sell off the rest, and keep myself to a limit of three or four purebreed pens. Either that, or start building additional pens in a big way!!!
