Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

We are now 2 months into this thread and we would like to make sure that everyone is meeting their obligations in a timely manner. If you have claimed eggs before Nov. 10th (unless the offer stated there would be a delay) and have not received them or a DC# that they have been sent, please PM me with the details. If you have claimed PP and it has not been sent within 3 days, also let us know. We will try to make sure we keep on top of any trends.

I have finally finished a summary of all the swaps since the beginning of this thread up to Nov. 15. It is sorted according to each swapper and includes the swaps you claimed and the ones you promised. It can be accessed here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Am7IlDTXygsBdGZ5Vi1ta0lFRmY4UHhiRGhYdHFpcXc
Disclaimer:This spreadsheet is for reference only. I believe all are valid swaps, but I may have missed a roll back or two. If you find a mistake, let me know and I will investigate it.

Here are this week's current standings as of 5:30AM EST, Sat. Nov. 24. For all potential new swappers, we welcome your participation, but please read the rules on page 1, post #1 of this thread.

Game #1 - Whenever someone goes over 7 swaps, they lose 2 swaps the following week. The first person to catch it and post "Jinx"- (name of person going over), gets an extra swap in the current week. If crazypetlady (CPL) goes over, everyone gets an extra swap that week, and the first person to catch her and post "Jinx-CPL" gets a special prize of eggs from CPL. Start stalking!

Game #2 - Whoever claims the 50th, 75th, and 100th swap of the day (yes, I think we will get up that high this spring or before) will win an extra wild card swap to be used in the winner's week of choice.

CPL went crazy this week, so looks like everyone gets tons of extra swaps this week.

Those in red are done swapping until 12:01 EST on Sun. Nov. 25. Those in yellow are getting close to a limit.

Below is a list of the new swappers that still have to complete their initial 7 swaps, so are limited to one swap at a time until each one is verified. Once you have been cleared by crazypetlady, kraftyladies, babymakes6 or madamwlf for another swap, you may claim another, regardless of what my list says. I don't keep track of whose swaps have been verified, just the swappers that need to have that done. My list is only published once a night, but your swapping status may change a few times during the day. Once all of your 7 initial verified swaps are completed, your name will be moved to the big list. I may not have everyone's name here that is already swapping, but all new swappers will be added here until I hear differently. As long as all your previous swaps have been completed and verified, you are good to go! Happy swapping!

You asked for it, and here it is - swap totals since the beginning of the thread for the new swappers!

Okay, Folks, I must be slow or something, but I need some explanation of the daily report.

1. What's with the time thing?
2. I've done one swap. Where did my "previous two" come from to make a total of three?

Thanks!

I'm sad that 3 didn't make it. I've been rethinking my packing since it was my first time. I have a theory about what may have gone wrong. I would love feedback from everyone. I wrapped each egg in a 12" x 12" bubble wrap that formed a "tube" with open ends. I filled the open ends with shredded paper and stood the eggs up in the box. I filled in all remaining spaces with shredded paper, and I think I may have packed too much in the spaces. Do you think if I filled the spaces too much it would have caused it to not have enough "give" and put too much pressure on the eggs? That's the only thing I can come up with since caj mentioned in her PM that the box was ok. What do you think?
Caj- I like your idea about double boxing. I think I'm going to try a few different methods to see which one works best. Do you have room in your bator for a few more eggs?
Brandy

I have been using the double boxing method for about 2 years now. I wrap each egg in a square of bubble wrap and place pointy end down in an egg carton customized to the number of eggs being shipped with the lid cut off that it rests on the top of the eggs. I use packing tape to secure the top on and wrap bubble wrap around the box. This is packed in the shipping box with more bubble warp at the bottom of box and packing peanuts around the sides and bubble wrap at the top. I mark the "up" side of the box. probably doesn't make any difference but does make me feel better. I have had (knock wood) only one egg not make it and the buyer said she it looked like some one speared the box with a knife straight down to the egg. I mostly use the "shoe" sized box the PO provides for free, but have used the same method with larger -18 egg shipment- square boxes with success. I did have one PO employee that suspended the box into one of their sorting boxes so that it wasn't stacked on a pallet with the other boxes when he found out there were egg in the box.

I get most all of my packing material recycled from work and do have a resource to purchase recycled packing material very inexpensively.

I usually band my eggs with bubble wrap, pack them into egg cartons with shredded paper (I have used shavings before, but only because I had an overabundance... It's not free like shredded paper, but works well) then pack the egg carton in a flat rate box. I use the eBay box 4, costs $7.

I will tell you the best hatching rate I have gotten with shipped eggs was with quail eggs off eBay. The guy had the quail egg flats, and he used sound board insulation- NOT the best idea. He put a piece on the bottom of the box, then the egg flat with the eggs, and another piece of sound board. I got like a 80-85 percent hatch rate.
I look into shipping with the same concept. Lowes sells cotton insulation, which I would use instead of fiberglass insulation... But between purchasing that and the special quail trays, it wasn't cost effective. I do plan on trying it in the spring though...

I just candled my cochin eggs from you, caroline, sadly none looked developed. I hope maybe I will have a late bloomer or something. Even when eggs make it whole, the trip is hard on them!!

1. What's with the time thing?

The rules on page 1 of the swap thread explain the time limit - "If you stall the thread for more than 24 hours TOTAL all offers combined you will not trade for the rest of the week, If possible the stalled offer will be rolled back to the offer before."

2. I've done one swap. Where did my "previous two" come from to make a total of three?

Operator error.

when i ship eggs. I bubble wrap each egg. I lay a inflated air bag at the bottom, then lay a piece of bubble wrap on top. I put a few of the eggs in. Then double up another piece of bubble wrap and lay on top of the eggs. I again put a piece of bubble wrap on top. I again lay more eggs on top of that. Then I add another piece of bubble wrap, and finally another inflated air bag on top.

Very rarely have i ever heard of a cracked egg, unless USPS played "kick ball" with the box.

Off topic question. Anyone here raise Icelandic sheep? Please PM me.
Don't now, but I did. Don't believe all the hype about parasite resistance. If anything, they are more susceptible than any other breed I've ever had! On retrospect, it makes sense that they have no resistance; they come from a place with low parasite numbers simply because they have the winters to kill them off. I'm in NC. We don't have such winters.

edited to add....I obviously missed that "please pm me" bit, didn't I?

Brandy,

Thanks for the offer. I would say go ahead to the next person on your list and then we can work another swap out later on. Between now and the NYD hatch I'm going to be doing split hatches. I would have room for the NYDHatchalong IF you don't have someone else on your list and have a few. I'm so looking forward to seeing my Marraduna's hatch.
