Hatching eggs

We have a silkie sitting on 3 eggs. We candled last night 2 definately has developing chicks and one was a? this morning she has cast out the ? egg. can silkies tell if tge egg is not developed?

I'm not sure how, but it does seem as though they can tell. I'll bet that smell has something to do with it but there could be many other factors; noise, movement, temperature, etc.

Chickens have been hatching their eggs for thousands of years, they must know what they are doing
