Hatching For Dummies? Help Needed!!!!

ok well the temp dropped pretty low because i took the lid off and the turner and added more water. Then i put the eggs in. It is catching back up now.

question on humidity: I filled all the troughs to the rim with water. Am i supposed to fill them all or just one or two unless the humidity is low?

First Calm down. Take a deep breath. If *I* can hatch 11 of 12 eggs in a styrphome (sP) borrowed , just had the flyer that came with the bator for instructions, YOU CAN DO IT TOO. (ok, maybe not that high a hatch rate, but I only wanted 3 or 4 to hatch, it was a classroom situation, so you KNOW they are all pretty much gonna hatch...

Oh, and the person who lent me the 'bator told me to put a wet sponge in it and rewet it every day. That's it. That's all I knew about hatching eggs.
So I read the flyer and did what it said. "Set thermostat to 100 degrees. When it reaches temperature add eggs, laying on their side. " That's it. Now someone told me to turn them twice a day. NO ONE told me about "lock down", so I turned them every day till the chicks appears. No one told me about candleing them to weed out the "dead" ones. (Oh well, they hatched)

So it isn't as exact a science as some seem to think. Their way works for them, and maybe a few of their friends. Someone else's way works for another group of people. Give it your best shot and everything will be fine. Really. Unless you cook them before you set them, they'll hatch if they are supposed to hatch.

I hope you hatch a great bunch of chicks to add to your flock. You sound like a very caring person

thank you i really needed that Cass. So far so good though. Turkey eggs are in and thermometer has been holding a temp of about 101. If i try to change it though it fluctuates pretty bad so i am just going to leave it there.

Dipsy Doodle Doo i guess 101 is close enough to 101.5 right. To all the others that told me 102 i dont think i can get it to exactly that. It either skyrockets or it gets too cold.

Does anyone know when you candle turkey eggs?

You're welcome.

I subscribed and am looking forward to following your first hatching adventure. I have my fingers crossed, really tight, that you hatch out all the chicks you can afford to feed.

another question. How often should i put water in the water trough in the bator. I cant tell how much water is in it at all times and i dont want to keep taking the lid off the bator. Can someone give me an estimate on when i need to refill it? I filled all of the water troughs yesterday
