hatching geese eggs

I have four new babies now! Thay all hatched out yesterday and are looking cuter than ever. The fifth egg that was showing movement yesterday looks still today. It's still in the incubator, when should I finally give up on it? Will post pics soon of the others.

Countrychix - have you candled your last egg to see if there's shadows and movement in the air cell? Can you hear any clicking noise???

Pete

Pete, I just sat back down at the computer. Yes, I have candled it twice and I see no movement and am hearing no sounds. I never heard anything from the previous 4 until they had internally pipped. The egg, through candling, looked good w/lots of movement at day 26. Then on day 27 or 28 it looked strange, I was seeing too much veining on one side where it should have been all in shadow and I saw no movement. The aircell had not enlarged in the previous 3 days despite running it dry. Day 28, the other eggs started internally pipping, egg #5 was now showing movement inside and I went into lockdown. Once the others had hatched and were in the brooder I candled again, which was last night, and still saw mmovement. Candled once again just before midnight and saw no movement. Same today. I am extremely happy with 4 goslings, especially since these were shipped eggs and my first time hatching goslings, but if there is still a chance for the last one I would like to give it that chance.

Hmmm.... doesnt sound too good Countrychix. Often when the egg dies all the veins receed and disintegrate within hours (there's no blood pressure to pump the blood through). Often near the air cell line there's a line of a 'sickly' pale yellow fluid.

I would keep it going for a little while just in case.

Could the gosling be turned around in your last egg? I would see a bit of movement in my third egg, but never as much and never heard internal pipping. The aircell never got as big as I the other two either, I guess because the gosling never pipped and drew down. Instead it made a hole in the other end, just like Pete's photos.

I don't know how to check that as I was gonna leave my alone until the other two hatched, and found out when I lifted it up to see a bit of shell cracked off.

Here's a picture that was taken last night of my 4 new babies. They were outside in the grass this afternoon and I should have more pictures of them tonight once my daughter downloads them from her camera. Going strictly on coloring I think the one in the very back is a girl. All the rest are boys(?).

I checked the 5th egg one final time, decided to open it and yes, the gosling was dead. I had an awful time trying to remove the membrane, which was very bloody. The gosling had expired without ever absorbing the yolk. It looked fully formed and perfect otherwise.

Anyway, the whole family just loves the other 4, even my husband who wasn't keen on the idea of geese to begin with.
