Oo! One of my Pilgrim eggs is peeping and tapping inside. I was doing my night time candling check for movement, didn't see any on the first two eggs (nothing dramatic anyway, just slight shadows) and I kept hearing a noise I thought was me rubbing the styrofoam. Nope! The third egg is peeping! Squealed for my husband to come over and see the bill tapping furiously on the inside and listen to the noise.
So cool. We've never hatched eggs before.
I have ducks in there that are supposed to be turned until Sat. but I can probably (I think) stop one day early so I can lockdown the incubator if (when!) the gosling gets through.
Crossing my fingers nature will take its course and all will be well.
I have my first gosling! He/she hatched about 15 minutes ago. It's shaking quite a lot, is this normal? The 4th egg has pipped too. Eggs 2 and 3 are slowly making progress. Hope to have at least one more baby when I get up in the morning. It's 2:25AM right now and I need to get some sleep. I'll post a pic as soon as I get a chance.
2nd egg had peeps and a chipped shell this morning. They didn't go through the membrane yet though (it's tough and yellowish -- is that to be expected?) I set the eggs away from the duck eggs, filled the reservoirs with water, closed vents and watching humidity go up (I was incubating dry before after reading all these notes). It's at 55-60% and going up.
The original peeper hadn't cracked the shell yet so far as I can see. The other egg remains quiet.
Nervous and excited. Lockdown will be tough, this hands off thing.
Daydreamer, the membrane sounds like it's normal, at least that what I'm seeing here but I'm a newbie to geese too.
The second gosling has hatched, and it looks like the 3rd will soon follow. The 4th egg is progressing slowly and after candling the 5th, I'm almost certain I saw movement. The aircell has increased significantly in size and is slanted. It just looks now like it's about 3 days behind the rest.
My concern is that the membrane seems very *tough*, almost stretchy. It's a yellowed-paper sort of yellow.
I'll accept that the color/texture/toughness is normal if experienced folks say so, but I don't want to ignore shrinkwrapping too long either if I "coulda" done something. The first egg to begin peeping hasn't even cracked the shell yet, it's the 2nd egg that began to peep that "did something" where I found cracked shell but tough yellow membrane.
Bottom as in small end or facing the bottom of the incubator? If it's facing down it has a greater chance to drown. When you put them in lockdown make sure the large side of the air cell is up because that's usually where they pip. You can stick a stick in the air hole of the incubator and try to turn it over a bit or Pete says it doesn't hurt to open for a quick second but that always scares me with others pipping. They really take their time
I did put all air cells the large side up, but it pipped at the bottom of the egg (facing bottom of incubator). I turned it around so its facing up. This is the one with the tough yellow membrane just inside the eggshell proper. The other one still wasn't doing anything to I made a little hole into the aircell to see where it was and it is facing "up" on its own. THAT membrane is whiter and more collapsed on the chick, or perhaps this is the inner membrane. Got both eggs surrounded by warm wet clothes (not over the open holes) and am leaving them be for now until either something happens, or nothing happens for too long.
Third egg is not making noise at all, but shadows at the base of the aircell. I assume it's a couple days behind the others.
