hatching geese eggs

Hi, I have been reading this looooong post over a space of 3 days!, I have been given 4 Embden goose eggs to hatch, someone said to leave them up to 14 days before setting, should i have done this? They were sat for 3 days.
I am using an Rcom suro with 12 Chocolate Orpingtons set at the same time, 11 are fertile but cant see in the goose eggs as yet.
Will they be ok together if i have to spray them? or do I dip the goose eggs?

Thanks,

Just a quick note - I have been reading with interest your comments here - I managed to hatch 6 goslings from 10 eggs in a Suro incubator - like Highlander from good old Scotland ( Ecosse as it is known here in France ), I did purchase it in England and it has been great... my geese here do tend to tread on babies and eggs and are good at crushing them!!!

I had one success from the first batch ( Mellow is now 5 weeks old.... ) the other goslings hatched last Monday and Mellow is now their Guardian... Mellow has imprinted on me but in a way that is no bad thing as when I call Mellow all of the chicks follow too! Mellow is an Embden and all of the others are Toulouse and I am so pleased as I do so love Toulouse!

Good luck to all of you with your efforts at hatching goslings!!!

p.s. I am English but now living in France

I hatched runner ducks and goslings in same incubator - funnily enough an rcom suro! Runner ducks came early so incubator was still rocking as they chipped the first dent. I stopped it then and it coincided with hearing the first noises/wobbles from the goose eggs. I lost one gosling dead in shell, but the other two hatched ok.
I did not know about cooling the eggs, but daresay my rubbish attempts to candle them probably counted as I tried all sorts of torches to be able to see if they were growing or not!

Ok. Tonight begins day 27 on my two remaining Toulouse eggs. I candled and weighed. If I figured correctly one has lost 17% and the other 20%. The one that has lost 20 is the one that has the misshapen aircell. I was getting nervous about this one as I had not seen movement but I happened to look at pointed end today and here is some definite movement. This is also the one with fluid in the aircell. Thisfluid is now almost gone so hopefully will not cause any problems at internal pip. Draw down on this egg will be difficult sincethe aircell is so misshapen but maybe if I just watch for descent into the bottom of the egg it will be more apparent? Does this sound reasonable? Do I need to do anything as far as my weight losses are going?

Hi Buffbeauty

Well you're almost there and it's time to leave the eggs on their sides ready to hatch. Place on a smooth surface and let them roll to their natural position and then mark the top side with a cross as a reference. The mis-shaped air cell is not unusual in detached air cells however the 20% loss is too high. This can result from the free fluid in the air cell as it is lost more easily than if the fluid contents were contained within the membranes.

The other with the 17% weight loss is fine. They should be beginning to draw down their air cells and shadow now, you could also try listening for internal pipping with the rythmic clicking sound. As they have both achieved required weight loss I would incubate at 37.2, increase humidity to 70% and stop turning.

Thanks Pete!! I have them on their sides, noted significantly larger aircells this AM and pretty good shadowing in the misshapen aircell egg. I had not added water yet so that I will do now! Pray for these 2 little guys to have a successful hatch!!

Just lost the gosling in the deformed aircell egg today. He was moving this am. Not just now. Watched for several minutes, still nothing so poked hole. Finally just opened because I was sure. And sure enough, dead. Yolk completely intact. So what happened. Had it just lost too much and shrink wrapped? Shouldn't he have started absorbing by now? Other one still has some movement.... Shadowing not increasing. Still at back of cell.
