HI! I'm a new chicken mama from northeastern IL. I grew up with backyard chickens and now for the first time have a flock of my own. I have 4 girls (I started with 5 and lost my sweet silver laced wyandotte yesterday) 2 golden comets, a Barnevelder and an ameracauna.

My husband and I also have a 4 year old boy who loves to give our chickens hugs and kisses (though we are trying to put a stop to that).

I joined BYC because after my Winnie the Wyandotte died so quickly yesterday I realized I needed a go to resource for helping care for my hens, particularly when something goes wrong.

So sorry for the loss of your beloved hen ❤️

It sounds as if you have more experience than a lot of us did when we first came to BYC, but you need extra support at times like this! Glad that you found us and welcome to the flock :jumpy .

You will be amazed at the plethora of information here. The archived threads and articles probably cover everything at least 10 times, but if you’re like most folks, myself included, the inclination is to post a question without looking first to see if it’s already been answered. I’ve embarrassed myself multiple times, but everyone is gracious with their time and knowledge.

And about your son loving up on the hens? I kiss my chickens every night! Seriously, what a great experience for a young child. So much to learn from caring for other creatures. How did he take the loss of Winnie?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Sorry about Winnie. :hugs Did she exhibit any symptoms prior to dying?
The day before she didnt leave the nesting box after her morning egg lay (and she didn't lay an egg). She let me pick her up and would sit with her butt up in the air a bit. My sister said she was probably broody and not to worry. I worried she could be egg bound but my sister assured me that was rare and she never had that happen to her hens in a decade of keeping hens. When i let her out the mornjng she passed she walked around the yard a little but mostly would just stand around. Then she layed down in the yard for a while and when I went out to check on her she had died. After she passed I checked her vent for an egg and didn't find one but I did notice some yolk in the nesting box. I worry that she may have had an egg break inside her and she died of infection. But thats the best theory I've got.

He hasn't really noticed yet, but she's the only one who's name he knew and he would always ask "where's Winnie" when we are putting them away. I don't mind him kissing or hugging the hens but he's not the most gentle person when he does it. I actually worry that he gave Winnie a "squishy" hug (super tight hug that we give each other when we need an extra tight hug) and broke her egg inside her.
