Hatching help!

The incubator doesn’t have a humidity gauge. I went to tractor supply to look for one yesterday with no luck. I put water in the bottom yesterday around 11. I will get some shelf liner today on my lunch break. Does it matter where I make the slit in the membrane?

You don't have to mark the air cell to assist - you can candle the egg and see where it is. Honestly now that it's zipping you really don't even have to do that, it's more of a 'just to be safe' thing. You're likely fine to just finish the zip for the chick at this point. With no way to tell what the humidity is, it's quite possible it's too dry in there and it's gotten dried out and stuck to the membrane and that's why it's not progressing.

I’m home to look at the chick again. I can see feathers from the open spot so I don’t think it’s a membrane issue. Can I just help finish unzipping it the rest of the way? Could it possibly be in the wrong position to hatch all the way??

Sure, start unzipping it a bit. If you see blood, stop. Take it out of the Bator to work on it so you don't let out humidity

Yes, just carefully finish the zip for it. If you see blood stop, but I really doubt you will :)

I have it partially out. Should I let it finish itself? I’m in the bathroom with shower running hot. Should I put back in incubator to finish itself? Or just finish getting it out?

Also when it gets out do I need to leave in the incubator till we get home? We plan on buying another baby chick to keep it company and put them in the box we have set up with a heat but it’s in our basement. Will that be too cold for it?

Just slide its head the rest of the way out and see if it can push out on its own from there.

Yep, leave it in the incubator for now until you've got the brooder set up. The basement will be fine as long as you can get it to be be 95 degrees under the light on one end of the brooder.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your help! It is out and looking around. We will get the heat lamp started up and leave it in the incubator till after work.
