Hey neighbor! I lived in B'ville for 12 years! Moved back up North a couple hours from the Cuse. Past Watertown.

I was in B'Ville '98-'01 then moved closer to work in Oneida. I liked the North Country tho- school @ Potsdam. Are you hammered with snow? What do you do to keep the chicks warm in the winter

Out of 30 Phoenix x cemani eggs,I had 26 hatch. For breeding I kept one rooster and 3 hens. The pullets have gypsy faces with blue ear lobs. The rooster has a long tail

You'll have to sell us some eggs if you are interested~ I would love to hatch some super cool funky chickens!

I was in B'ville from '94-'06. Worked at McLane for almost 9 years. We got hit good with snow. Not as bad as Buffalo though...lol I am just starting my flock. I have my almost 10 week old from our first hatch attempt and my 12 - 2 1/2 week olds. For this winter I am attempting to house them inside and trying to find homes for the extra roos as I become sure of the sexes. We have a spare back room off the house that if it gets to be to much I will move them there and put a heater out there as it's not a heated room atm. March/April I will start renovating one of the sheds into the main coop and putt up a run as soon as the ground thaws, that way as soon as we start getting warmer tempts I can take them out to the coop during the days and get them used to coop life. It's gonna be real hard on my older chick. He/she is totally a pet....lol. Next winter is going to be the big test. I've done a ton of reading about winter coops, hopefully I do it right!

I had to put a new roof on this year,last year snow broke 4 rafters.

So sorry for the other 2 losses, my vet said it seemed as if the chick was not right from the get go. Mine was just 5 days old.
keep my babies on dog potty pads then move them to sand. The vet recommended against switching them over to the sand right now (i usually switch them at 2 weeks, easier to clean). I have given them cut up paper towel pieces in a bin as they are already trying to dust bathe abd get no satisfaction with the puppy pad. My chickens have shavings in their nesting boxes & the outdoor portion/run have not had any eat it. Through I did have a meat bird (heritage) have a crop full of shavings when I caged them up for the 12 hours before proceeding (no food allowed). Through this is my 2nd yr of meat birds and only the first time seeing this (approx 100 birds).

I am also now on the waiting list for a tree fire farm pair for the spring, my mother will be picking them up in person (she winters in FL) so no shipping required

What reason did the vet give for recommending against the sand? I have been going back and forth with what to use in the coop once it's all set. I hear a ton of raves about using sand, then I hear how deep litter method is the way to go, especially in cold winters. I have a few months to figure out what I want to do, so I guess I'll keep researching.

I use sand in all my coops with great reviews. I think the vet didn't want anything new for these chicks, nothing they could possibly eat or have a problem with as they also told me to hold off on introducing treats too. I find the deep litter method jusy to dirty for me
