Hatching some mountain quail

Hi,
First I want to thank you for replying to my message however, there may be a few things I need to clarify. First, with over 35 years of experience raising both domestic and wild animals, I know the domestic animals cannot be released to the wild, therefore, I have no intention of releasing my birds into the wild, I am not new to this and all of my animals mean a great deal to me, I would never be so careless as to release then, expecting them to fend for themselves. And second, and the most concerning thing to me is the fact that, I live in an area of California where we've seen a great deal of our wildlife disappear. The valley quail are almost nonexistent right now, I don't know if it's because of the drought but, whatever the reason, I would like to do more than sit around and watch the species disappears for good. So rest assured I take care of my animals, I respect wildlife, and not one single bird of mine will be released into the wild. So thank you for your concern but, I am going to continue what I'm doing because I want to make a difference the only way that I know how, and I will continue to look forward to the day when I might be a part of a program to increase the number of wild quail.

Thank you

If you want breed mountain quail as a hobby, that is great, but I do not suggest you keep them for purposes of releasing them into the wild because (1) domestic-raised birds have a low survival rate in the wild due to not having learned foraging skills, predator avoidance, as well as water locations. It will be a wasted effort because you'll just be feeding the predators and if they don't get taken down by predators, they'll die of thirst or hunger; (2) where there are native populations of mountain quail, biologists have grouped them into subspecies based on minor plumage characteristics. In the very low probably that if one does make it, it might contribute unwanted genes into the population; (3) if any survive, they may transfer diseases that may be detrimental to local native populations.

Just curious, which area do you live in?
And it is illegal to release pen raised game birds into the wild without a permit from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. In addition, the state of CA requires a game bird breeders license to keep game birds in captivity that are present naturally in the wild,

You may have some kitty cats living in your area. Improving the environment for the birds is a good way to improve the population combined with the effective predator control

Thanks for the clarification. I probably had interpreted your first post differently because since you mentioned that you wanted mountain quail and then wanted to increase their population, I had assumed you intended to release them. Anyhow, it looks like we have a common interest regarding the desire to increase wild quail populations. I haven't scouted the Sierra's yet, but think so too that the drought may be the cause if there's a lower population level. Mountain quail are my #1 birds.

Hi, thank you responding to my post regarding the decrease in the California Valley Quail population in my area. In years past, you could not walk 50 feet without seeing or hearing quail, but this year I am lucky if I hear any on the 350 acre ranch where I live. I wish it was as simple as a cat problem, but the area is too large to place the blame on cats or other predators. I am hopeful that over the next few months my post may be more positive, possibly reporting a quail population of increasing numbers. Thank you again, Tracie
