I wouldn't want to learn on shipped eggs. Too many of those don't hatch. You might ask the person providing the prize if they'd consider sending it later, after you learn a little with some test batches. Then try some local inexpensive eggs, (check craigslist) maybe even just ask somebody who sells eggs for eating if they keep a roo with the hens, and if they do, ask them to save out a dozen unrefrigerated for you. Barnyard mixed breeds are often the easiest to hatch, inexpensive, and great to learn on. Or, maybe you could have your prize sent to somebody else, and get eggs from that person sometime in the future, when you're ready.

If they have a good hatch, maybe you'll still get the same breed!

I know most of my barred rock eggs are round too, I am looking at them close and trying to find the roundest ones. some look completely round but next to another egg sometimes it looks like a pointy.. but then again could be my imagination!! I am going to try anyways! I always hatched and didn't check the eggs, its something an old timer told my DH at a sale, he was looking for a rooster cause he does that round egg hatch and always gets hens.
thought it would be fun to try at least!
Barred Rocks tend to lay rounder eggs than other breeds
