Sponsored Post Hatching the Facts on Medicated Chick Starter Feeds for Layers

At pastry man
Because it has a higher protein(21%) than grower(18%) ill be feeding them whole oat and a supplement feed ( corn oil, milk and there feed mixed together)

My feed store uses Privett Hatchery in Az. The store owner is very particular about the products he sells , will not use Ideal Hatchery ? ? previous prob, I think. Just mentioned Privet ? or Privit ? Privit I think in case you wanted to chedk them out. I have gotten babies from this feed store before and never had anything but very healthy, fast growing peeps.

Yes Evangelina. You can do that. I do the same with chickens. I give them some pellets for calfs with 21 % protein more and more grain and corn to go along with it.
I checked all the nutrients in the calf pellets first, and it is fine. A little low on calcium when used for layers. But good for chickens and cocks. I started using it for the layers also. And they just started eating much more shells. They know what they are doing.

Great article, but I still have a question. Our local feed store rep said DO NOT eat any eggs laid by birds on the Starter Feed. We have a half dozen juveniles on the starter feed and a couple of mature hens that are actively laying. Since they share the same coop all birds are eating the Starter Feed. Do we need to throw the eggs away??

No earlhider. Not just because it is starter feed. But perhaps if there is something bad in Your particular starter feed?

If it is medicated stater feed, I guess the antibiotic might transfer to the egg. If you give antibiotics to other animals you cannot slaughter and eat them for ?X? weeks.

My bantam Cochin just hatched some babies regularly I feed them chicken scrat, oyster shell, and laying mash do I need to switch to chick starter. I Also have three other hens that will lay with laying mash

Chick starter has more protein which helps the chicks grow better. The layer feed has more calcium for egg production--and less protein.
If I offer both layer feed and starter or grower feed all the chickens like the starter/grower better. It must taste good.
