Hatching winter chicks.

I didn't know that people incubated in the winter (in cold areas). I live in SE KY and I just started with chickens this last summer. What area are you in? what are your plans for brooding/keeping till you can put them on the ground? I've been wanting to hatch as soon as I can but after looking at the past average temperatures it seems like late April will be my time to set eggs. I have an unheated barn with an off the ground brooder box that I heat with a heat lamp and a brinsea warmer.

Well, thank you for adding to my chick fever :) please update on your hatch when you can. Finger crossed for your hatch.

Ours will have to be in the house for a bit. Incubation was done in the laundry room as it's the warmest room of the house. Our kids got the incubator for Christmas and we are willing to keep them in as long as we need to so it's turning out just fine.

Here are the 3 that made it to full growth and hatching. 2 Barred rock purebred and a lavender orpington rooster cross with the buff orpington hen. They are all less than 24hrs old. Just moved to the brooder because I forgot to take out the shelf tray so they lacked headroom.

Chick 9... still no slw or barred rock... I know there were some in there. Could daddies Gene's make them not show it until they start feathering? Also these guys are less scared then most I've hatched out.

Looks like neurological.....give it some Nutri Drench or Sav-A-chick electrolytes/vitamins.
Soak a qtip and hold it against the side of beak, it will seep into mouth and it should swallow. Can stroke under beak and front of neck to stimulate swallowing.
Don't squirt it into mouth as it may aspirate the liquid and drown.

Okay thank you

Is it drinking on its own...following a beak dip in the waterer and it's hatch mates example?
Eating on it's own from crumbles sprinkled on the floor of brooder?
