Hatching winter chicks.

Dead eggs or chicks is a bit different.
Do you breed rabbits?
No death near birth there?
It is different when dealing with baby animals. It helps when they know that the animal is meant for food from the start. (Honestly, I had a harder time sending Butch to be processed than the boys did. Until I realized I wouldn’t have to fix fences all the time. He thought he was a horse. Every time we took the horses out for a ride, he break through whatever fence we had him in - electric, barbed wire or wood - and come looking for us. It was kind of funny to see this Holstein steer come running down the road after us, bellering his head off. Seeing drivers’ reactions when they would come down our road was entertaining, too. It wouldn’t have been so bad if we could have gotten him to go in front of us so it would at least look like we were trying to herd him home.)

I didn't know that people incubated in the winter (in cold areas). I live in SE KY and I just started with chickens this last summer. What area are you in? what are your plans for brooding/keeping till you can put them on the ground? I've been wanting to hatch as soon as I can but after looking at the past average temperatures it seems like late April will be my time to set eggs. I have an unheated barn with an off the ground brooder box that I heat with a heat lamp and a brinsea warmer.

Well, thank you for adding to my chick fever :) please update on your hatch when you can. Finger crossed for your hatch.

I live in middle of missouri. They will be in my garage which is insulated in a kiddie swim pool (part will be cut off for a bit until about 2 weeks old ) they will stay in the garage until big enough to go outside into a coop.
First time doing this. Had chicks in April last year while it was still cold and snowing.

Heated garage! So much envy over here :) sounds darn near perfect for baby chicks. I don't have a garage just a carport. The barn has electricity but is not insulated nor is my brooder. I wish you all the best with your hatch.

Not exactly heated, but protected from the elements and stays about 20° above outside temp. There will be a heat lamp for them and will probably think about getting a second to help out since this weekend is talking about being about 10° f
