Hatching with 2 broodies

Hey! With all the excitement I heard no mention of our 1000 posts!!! Lol. Congratulations Teila!! Your bubbies are beautiful. So sorry you lost one. That's a terrible feeling I know. (It was 1?). I had so much catching up to do!! I've been putting up fences and building Mini coops lol. Finally the ebay coop came... So glad the rest are fine and Cillas having a calmer go of it. A little Penguin... Lol.
Molly has hatched 7 so far....7 little penguins!!! All black and all look like my little penguin...lol. TG I wanted to let the neighbor raise them because Molly was such a bad mom before....she had them on the roost alone to fend for themselves before they were feathered out and I lost the one on a 14 degree night. Then after I took cookie in the house...to avoid her freezing too she abandoned her and left her to be the lone cookie... She was really mean to her.
So, all that said I was afraid...but I have the little Mini coop it's very small and she is in it...in the barn ( I listened this time lol). And all the eggs minus 3 have hatched and the others have pipped. The last time she left the eggs to chase chicks and I ended up with 2. Anyway I have the mini coop in the barn...per y'all's suggestion and so far all is well. THANKS!! For your help an iff all goes well I may not need a surrogate mom.

Correction 8 bubbies with the last being a very light gray. So cute! I was go gn to take pics but my phone died;). After a charge I'll try again.
Congrats on the egg from Jan Liz....go Marsha! How many do you have now TG?? So exciting!!!!!! All the littles!!!

That's so exciting, TGG! I didn't realize you were getting ready for a hatch! You've been so quiet about it! Keep a close eye on those 10 bubbies!! Wow, that's really amazing! Molly must be improving.

Hmm, our 1000th post was a bit of a dud, wasn't it. Really, Teila, you could have made it more exciting. ;)

Correction TGG, Jan hasn't laid here yet, just Marsha. That doesn't stop Desi from trying to mate with Jan - I think he likes beards - but, she's not laying yet, nor is Frida or Lucy. So, 4 regular layers out of a potential 7. Frida treats Lucy like something between a best friend and a daughter, so maybe she won't go back to laying at all, since she never really weaned her? Lucy's comb and wattles are getting pretty big and red, so I'm hoping she'll be an early bloomer like Desi.

I totally forgot about the 1,000 posts and it wasn't until I read TGG's comment "With all the excitement I heard no mention of our 1000 posts!!!" that I remembered we were getting close. Even then I thought Liz was just expecting me to celebrate it happening with heaps of emoticons as I do; I didn't realise I had posted it until I went back and had a look! It was a bit of a non event, wasn't it ... lol

Thank you TGG, we lost two little ones on their first night/morning. I sent the breeder an e.mail and some pictures of surviving bubbies; let her know the hatch rate, losses etc.
I did not tell her that we had 5 hatch early on the Wednesday and then 2 later in the afternoon but I did tell her it was Day 21.
She came back with "I am very surprised they did not hatch until Day 21, mine are nearly always 19th or 20th day. Maybe the two you lost were overcooked".
I didn't know that they could be over cooked; may be the two little ones who did not make it were the late hatchers that afternoon.

Congratulations TGG!! 10 from 10!! That is awesome

Sounds like Molly is going to be busy. I am pleased she seems to be getting the hang of it this time around.
Can't wait for the pictures

4 out of 7 is not bad Liz, at least you are getting some eggs now .. I remember the egg drought of late 2013

lol.

Good ole Dusty is still giving me that one solitary egg every day or two .. I am stock piling; I have a whole 3 eggs in the fridge!!

PS. I have just watched a heap of You Tube videos of 5 month old Silkie roosters strutting their stuff, first crows etc. I am now even more convinced Suzi is not a rooster.

Hi y'all. Well i was confused in the Jan Marsha laying...Jan needs to get it in gear! I think i would gladly take a good momma hen over a high egg production any day. Count your blessings you have such good imommas/aunties. :). Yes. As you'll see in the pics Miss Molly is in her new coop. It's my "broody coop" and she is snug as a bug and was able tonsit on her eggs and the chicks couldn't go far. Now that they are all hatched out I still have the option of taking the chicks to my neighbor who has two momma hens who have also just hatched...and they are dependable mommas and he said they would raise them. So far we are doing OK. Molly is in the little coop in the barn...I do have to make a decision soon if I am going to let her raise them or let them be raised by other momma...each has its own problems...reintegrating them into the flock...it's such a tough decision. I was not going to let her raise them...but Sassy became broody and thy had divided up the eggs and both sat for most of the 21 days but at the last minute Molly took all the eggs and Sassy stopped setting. Crazy chickens.

TGG, yep sometimes these chickens of ours do be crazy!

CONGRATULATIONS!! Wow, look at them all!! So cute!

It sounds and looks like Molly is doing fine this time around. Just my five cents worth, I would give her another chance :)

I love your chick pics Teila. How exciting to get such a variety in colors. I can't wait to see how they grow up. I didn't even get one white one this time. Lol. That's ok. Cookie is my white one...all the little blacks are paybacks for losing little penguin. Lol
