Hatching with 2 broodies

Oh and speaking of banner egg laying days...I got 16 yesterday!!!! one pen went 3/3 another 6/7 the third 1/2 and finally 6/9 in my brown pen! Yay! One of the non-layers in the brown pen is molting I am not sure who the other two are but most likely my Delaware who rarely puts anything normal in the nest box...It nearly always thin shelled, shelless, on the poo tray or in the run or yard. I believe she is an internal layer. For about a year she has only laid sporadically and always something odd and Buckbeak is just coming out of a molt and I don't think she is laying yet so all of those girls who had no excuse did lay an egg :)

My chick is LOUD!!! but it is actually taking real live chicken steps. So glad!

Here is a pic of the newly done hobbles

and another

of her standing up like a real bird while wearing them.

Thank you Liz :)

Good to read that your little one is improving TG.

Sadly it is not good news for a couple of my bubbies :(
We had two with what looked like head injuries this morning; one had passed away and the other one is not looking good. Feeling a bit gutted! I didn't have a lot of time to do much this morning before having to leave for work but Hubby is home and is going to keep an eye on the remaining injured one. The other 5 look fine.

I have no idea what happened, maybe their little skulls were not properly formed and they got a bit squashed under Cilla; I also wonder if she might have got a little over zealous with pushing the remaining eggs around under her and maybe caught these two with her beak. For that reason, I have taken the remaining two eggs away. Today is Day 22 and there was no sign of pipping and I just don't want to take the chance of more injuries if these were the cause. As I said, I have no idea but I do not think she would intentionally hurt them; she is being so good with them and she was fine with her first hatch.

I hope everyone is OK when I get home; this is not a nice feeling

Plus, Hubby is booked in for surgery this afternoon ... going to be a very apprehensive day I think!

Oh, Teila, I'm so sorry to hear about the injured bubbies!
Sounds like a hard day to be at work. Sending good thoughts your way!!

Yeah, tough day I think. I wonder if there is something I could have done but I have no idea what happened; maybe I could have taken the other two eggs away yesterday but I wanted to give them a chance and I don't even know if that is the reason. I will feel a lot better if when I get home the uninjured ones are still OK; I don't hold out much hope for the other one :(

Then I have to wait for the phone call to pick up Hubby from the hospital; today is one day I regret giving up smoking!! Aaaaaargh!!

I don't see how you could have done anything wrong. Intervention seems to cause trouble as often as it helps. Cilla is a good mama. Nature is tough on chickens, no doubt! So many eggs, so few babies get to grow up!

Thanks again Liz..don't know how I would manage without Team Broody!

I am trying to tell myself *%$^ happens sometimes and there is nothing we can do about it. Also trying very hard to think positive that when I get home, all will be OK and the worse will be over! Not having much time with them this morning is not helping, maybe this afternoon will be better and I can get a good look at everyone else and be assured they are OK.

Hubby just rang and the 5 healthy bubbies are currently 'playing' in the food bowl and Cilla is watching over them. The 'injured' chickie has now also passed and he thinks it could be a birth defect as it does not look right in the belly plus it's 'head injury'.

I feel a little better knowing that the remaining 5 seem to be doing OK. I know it is silly but I had visions of going home to more sadness.

Howdy Team :)

The five remaining bubbies are doing well, eating, drinking and exploring. I love the colours this time around.

The little one at the front looks like a penguin :)

I wonder what colour these two will turn out to be:

Precious! I put a mirror in with my baby and it keeps going behind it, I think it is looking for the other chick.
