Hatching with 2 broodies

They are just beautiful, Teila!! Are they all cochins?
Thank you Liz :)

Yep, they are Bantam Pekin Cochins. They are just so cute!

It was with great apprehension that I went out to check on them when I awoke this morning ... apprehension became happiness pretty quickly; mumma and babies all doing well this morning, no more overnight losses.

They seem a lot more friendly, curious and adventurous than the Silkie bubbies were. Cilla is also less 'stressed' this time around so maybe her being calmer is rubbing off on the little ones. When I was feeding them this morning I was able to reach out and gently stroke two of them without them or Cilla freaking out. I also think not having to move them immediately after the hatch to somewhere Cilla had never seen before and the fact that their current abode is where Cilla has always laid her eggs and slept and is more 'open' to their surroundings, comings and goings etc probably has a lot to do with it also.
When I left for work they were all out on the balcony having breakfast

Hubby is home from hospital and doing well. General anaesthetics are scary; so happy that is over and he is home :)

Today is going to be a much better day; being Friday is always a bonus! :)

Yay for healthy chicks. I am sure you are right that being in familiar surroundings is helping Cilla to be a calmer mommy!
Hey TG, good morning :)

Aaaw, the poor little munchkin .. have you got a little stuffed toy you can give it to cuddle up to?
That pink sock is super soft and fuzzy and warm. I may have to get a chick though. They have white rocks at the feedstore closest to me but they are two weeks old already and white rocks are a bit down my list of birds to add.

I think I'm confused, TG. Have you tried to put your bantam chick in with the broody mom and the other chick? Is there just one chick with her now? It seems like it would be worth a try to do a highly supervised introduction.

@lizgarf I want this one's legs to be working correctly before I try to give it to the mama. Tomorrow afternoon I will take the braces off and see how it looks then if all is well I will give it to the mama. But if it doesn't heal correctly/ enough to keep up it will need a friend. So right now it has a mirror and the warm fuzzy sock. It is curled up next to the sock sleeping right now.

Aaaw how sweet!
I so hope that bubby is OK to join mumma and family very soon.

Our little guys took their first trip down the ramp and into the big wide world, well, the protection of the Chateau at least. The little yellow one is under Cilla somewhere :)

So adorable!!

Hey, remember how I said that the chickens use the run to go to the backyard, but won't use it to go back to the coop, even if they seem to really want to go back to the coop? They wait for me to lead them back through the gate to the front? Well, Marsha is the first chicken to officially figure out how to use the run to go back to the coop on her own, and she did it to lay her egg in the nest box! I'm so proud!

She is a clever girl!! Won't be long now and she will be showing the others how to do it. It is so nice to read good news for Team Broody and even better that the good news is currently far out weighing the bad.

How goes it with DDD? I am thinking that no news is good news on this subject?

No crows or eggs from Tina or Suzi and no rooster behaviour yet. Suzi's comb still has me worried but I try very hard to not think about it. Time will tell and nothing I can do to change the outcome.

It's going well with Desi, thanks. He's easy to put in the carrier at night (though I swear last night Lucy and Frida were trying to hide him from me), and he hasn't woken me up since before I started this technique. No neighbors have complained, so hopefully they're not going to the city instead. It seems to be working out.

I can't believe that Tina or Suzi would be hiding their roosterness this long. They're 2 days older than Desi, right? If they're not trying to mate with Dusty, yet, they must be hens!

I am so happy it is working out with Desi .. I have been and will keep having positive thoughts for you that you get to keep him.
Tee hee at Lucy and Frida; they just want to snuggle up to him at night! :)

Tina and Suzi are 19 weeks old today. Sadly for my apprehension levels, Silkies can take sometimes 8-12 months to reveal their gender.
