Hatching with 2 broodies

whooohoooo and dang you are up EARLY!!!

Same thing happened here
sad.png
I gave my broodies their eggs on Sat then I went OOS...I live in California and am in NJ right now...anyway DH is in charge of the coops and he ended up with hens where they don't go. Someone got on top of one of Petunia to lay her egg and in doing so broke one of the eggs I had set. I don't know how much goo got all over the place..(these are bantam eggs so hopefully there wasn't much) and I won't till I get home on Sunday
barnie.gif
I guess it is silly for me to worry about it from here but what would you do once you got home to assess the situation? At that point would you just candle more frequently?. I have no sense of smell so can't sniff test. Should I toss any eggs that were gunked? DH is saving eggs for me and not refrigerating in case I have to replace the whole hatch but it won't be with the bantam eggs b/c those didn't come from my birds.

So Marie did you scrap this go round and give her more??
Hi Tommysgirl
So far I have done nothing.
barnie.gif
I guess I will just wait and see what happens. I tried to research the odds of eggs hatching with goo on them but I really couldnt find anything on this. I just wish I hadnt tried to wipe them off and turn them so roughly. If there was anything inside I must of scrambled them!
he.gif

I will let them go and pray for the best.

I understand how you would worry about it. There is just something very special about new life even if it is this early on.
I guess we can candle them but I am thinking I may just wait. It teaches me patience.
barnie.gif

Please let me know what you decide to do and try not to worry too much, it always works out for the best somehow!

Yes It's ever so sweet letting mama do her thing! I'm guessing summers here after all frogs spawn is hatching chicks are peeping Yay!

Morning all! Hope all the broodys and chicks are doing OK. TG, glad you finally heard from the lady with the broody silkie. I hope she is doing OK. Having a good time with your daughter????
Quote: I hope all is well with the eggs. I would be going crazy. When Molly had her first hatch and one of the first to hatch, she sat on and squished....
sad.png
I was not home and was getting all the hatching info from hubby. It was so frustrating! My poor husband yesterday when the baby roosters had been fighting wanted my keys to get in the house....I was yelling at him from the coop/yard about what was going on with the baby roosters...lol, he went around the house to get the hidden key to keep from getting dragged into another chicken delema....lol I yelled at him, "you are going all the way around the house to keep from coming out here....he said 'ya'. Laughed and went into the house. sigh......

How are the chickies doing Marie? Such a fun time when they are so little and cute. and not FIGHTING....
barnie.gif
I posted on a couple threads to get some info on what to do when baby roosters start fighting. One post said i must be mistaken, there is no way they could be fighting this young. That seemed to be the problem, no one really had a problem with roosters (if you can even call them roosters at 7 weeks)fighting at such a young age. 4 months seems to be the age when this wouuld be likely to occur. I have read several articles on raising roosters and have a wide variety of opinions from my posts. Most say separate them...It will be an ongoing problem. A very few, maybe...1?
wink.png
article i read said it would be OK as long as they are simply establishing their pecking order and as long as rooster #2 was OK with being rooster #2 and didnt continue to fight for dominance it would work itself out. That is what I was wanting to hear...lol. Just keep askin til you get the answer you want...right...lol. Anyway, I'll give it another day. So far so good. Last night and this morning, all is well. The little guy is healing up fine...I think the blood may have made the gashes look bigger than they area. Two bloody faced baby roosters can be alarming... The bood was making the rest of the baby flock pick on his neck and I was really worried!! The two spots on Goose's neck I sprayed with water and antiseptic. (the only time I've needed this is for fighting roosters!) Today, there is no sign of blood and they are eating side by side. Rider Roo is much bigger and darker and his feathers are in so much better giving him the impression of being much bigger. Goose is the only light colored bird in this hatch and the light feathers look more like fuzz and he looks pretty pitiful right now...but no blood so nothing is making the other birds want to peck. I'll watch them very close today and....one more fight..and i'll have to I'll separate them and decide how

Aw, TGG, that sounds tough! Why are the male halves of the species so darned problematic? Spraying/fighting tom cats, loud/fighting roosters, loud/fighting/spraying men. . . .oops!

I hope they work out their differences! Sounds like you might need to start looking for a home of some sort for one of the boys.

Nothing new to report here. Getting plenty of eggs, but none of them are blue.

SO TRUEIII

So far so good. I checked on them yesterday.,,freqeuntly! and again this morning and no new wounds...no fighting. I watched them eat together, they were together in their little huddle when they are all resting, Rider Roo chases after him when I give out the good treats to make sure Goose knows he gets first pick, but other than that we have been ok. Why cant I just have a happy flock.
We had a tornado last night. Not in my little town but just to the north of me. I could see the wall cloud and the funnel drop down. It was really scary. It was off in the distance and I knew it was not going to hit up but it was still really scary to see. This morning on the new they had some film of the damage and interviews with some of the folks affected. There was a chicken farm on a rural road in the town hit. Crazy (something) Chicken Farm was hit pretty bad and the channel 4 news had all the chickens on the news wandering around in all the rubble and debris. The coops and barns had been damaged and they were doing an interview with the poor guy who owned the farm. He said they had every kind of chicken and poultry but so many had been lost. It was really sad.
Hope all the bubbies and broodies are doing OK!!!

Hi Tgg,
No chicks here, just broody Penny. I candled 2 eggs last night, looked like there was something going on in there, but I was so scared I put them back before I was sure. I felt like a cat burglar, down in the coop in the dark sneaking around with a flash light!
hide.gif
I wanted to dress in all black just to play the part but I thought that was going a little too far. Penny sure didn't like it, every time I reached under her to grab an egg she would squeeze her legs so tight I thought I would need the jaws of life to get one of those darn eggs out!
rant.gif
So after 2 eggs I just thought let her be.....
Darn stubborn broodies, why wont they just let us interfere?????????????????????????????????

That tornado sounds really scary. I have never experienced one except for watching The Wizard of Oz a million times. I feel so bad for that chicken farmer
hit.gif

I also have had issues with the roos fighting, I have 2 black bantam cochin roos that were going to rip each others heads off. Charlston did manage to rip off Poppies waddle! I separated Poppie and put him in a separate coop with 2 bantie girls and his waddle has now grown back. I hate to re home roos but some times you just have to.
Hope everyone has a great day!
Marie
Sorry, I think I put this in the wrong place.

Hi Tgg,
I responded to your post but I think I quoted Liz. Sorry about that. I am still trying to figure out this quote thing.

I had a great time with my daughters and now DH and I are in Las Vegas with friends. It has been a fun spring break...home tomorrow.

I am glad she got in touch too I am going to go get them as soon as possible next week if it works out. I asked for a cell number or email....she never did give them to me so FB is our only way of communicating right now and it isn't very reliable apparently on her end.

I agree with whomever gave you the "They are sorting things out" post. Hatchmates generally spar a bit but they are still homies at heart

The tornado sounds so scary. I had a conversation with a woman on the plane back east and she said that she was so afraid of earthquakes that the possibility was on her mind the whole time she was planning for and during her recent trip to CA. She had done her research and knew WAY more about them then I did...but like most CA natives, I never worry about them until they happen

sorry about the lack of blue eggs. Is it possible Jan is one of those EEs that lays a brown egg?

I smiled at the image of your girl clamping down and not letting you take an egg without a fight.

Last night I dreamed that I hatched out dozens and dozens of tiny little chicks all silver and white :) I can't wait to candle when I get home and I imagine I will do it tomorrow night.

It's possible, but I know Jan isn't laying yet. I keep pretty neurotic tabs on my hens, so I know who lays what. Marsha lays a pinkish-cream-colored egg, instead of blue, but I had already suspected she was not really an Ameraucana (she's too pretty to be one - no muff, small single comb). Jan should lay blue eggs if she ever goes back to laying, and I'll know one way or the other when she does.
