Oh that is too funny!!! Okay, according to correct rules of chicken counting, I only have 12.5 chickens. (11 hens, 3 bantam hens - the rest don't count.) Do I pass chicken math now?![]()
Also, I obviously need more, 12.5 is not nearly enough!![]()
Welcome we try to be helpful and sweet and to make sure everyone knows that there is more than one way to skin a cat and raise a flock! This is the only site I am using. It is the BEST!
Ok Teila,Howdy Team![]()
Lunch time for me, so reading my way through masses of posts. Good to see our little Team Broody so active.
MM, welcome back from lurkdom!
Oh dear, the Jurassic Park gang do sound like a bit of a handful; I hope you are able to find some nice homes for them.
Your li’l school house is looking really good; looking forward to the pictures of the finished product and it’s new tenants enjoying their digs.
CC999, aaaw Muppet and Maddy are cute names. Nice pics! They are adorable! I especially like the ones of the beautiful white silkies on the nice green lawn .. gorgeous!
R846, fingers crossed that you have success with your broody Isa Brown. Sorry I can not comment on their broodiness either as I have no experience with Isa’s.
Lolz IC, I can only imagine what R846’s Isa would look like after trying to raise 27+ chicks .. I am thinking she would resemble a frizzle! lol
16 paws and IC .. beautiful pictures! Keep them coming!
TG .. I agree, Gracie Belle definitely needs to lift her act and bring on the broody!
Welcome chicky68! With regards fence height, I think it really depends on the breed, determination and age of the chicken as to how well they fly. I have five bantams. I am in a residential area with low fences so when I purchased the original two, I clipped one of their wings (if you clip both wings, they apparently can still fly quite well. If you only clip one it makes them a little lopsided which causes a flight-balance issue).
I have not had to clip their wing since as they have no urge to leave home. I kept two chicks from two separate hatches and also recently bought a Frizzle Pekin. These three have not needed their wings clipping as they have learnt the boundaries from the older gals.
PS. They are supervised free range only.
If you do consider clipping the wing, you need to be very careful that you do not clip too short and cause bleeding. There are heaps of threads on safe wing clipping.
On the FF topic:
MM, I saw your comment regarding the Nestle Quik containers; they are not metal are they?
On the compost topic:
Yep, IC, no mice problems with this particular bin. Also, the amount of time the girls hang around their ‘bug-house’ I doubt very much any mouse would be silly enough to move in.
I agree 16 paws, I would not be happy with a spinning bin. I like the solid uprights as the ‘done’ stuff, ready for the garden, is easily accessed from the bottom and you just throw all the fresh stuff in at the top.
On the chicken count topic:
I have 5 bantams .. none sitting on eggs and as it happens, none laying eggs either! Lol
Using TG’s chicken math, I only have 2.5 chickens!![]()
I would like to start a new topic:
What other critters do you have at your place?
I will kick off with mine .....
I have two beautiful house cats. A 5 year old black male, Syba and a 3 year old black and white female, Chimee and
7 or so goldfish in the outside ponds.
PS. No tadpoles anymore ... the cold snap killed them!![]()
