Hatching with 2 broodies

On the FF topic:

MM, I saw your comment regarding the Nestle Quik containers; they are not metal are they?

I would like to start a new topic:

What other critters do you have at your place?

I will kick off with mine .....
I have two beautiful house cats. A 5 year old black male, Syba and a 3 year old black and white female, Chimee and
7 or so goldfish in the outside ponds.

PS. No tadpoles anymore ... the cold snap killed them!

Teila, Nope, these are plastic. They are pretty big, bigger than a jar, but I am not sure they would be big enough to feed 100% FF. More of a start and supplement for now I suppose.

We have a dog and a fish here right now. My horse is at DH's father's farm for now, but hopefully will be here in about a year. Depending on how active the mice are here, we may just add a barn cat or two to the mix some day as well.

Wait, those tadpoles never turned into frogs?? How long do those little things last like that??

Oh 16P! Love the pups!! We had a westie before Lilly, a once in a lifetime kinda dog. All that long hair reminds me of him. I used to like to keep him shaggy.

A good amount should get done on the School House tomorrow. I have my herb garden to plant and fence in as well. High of 87 on Thursday. I hope to take the gang outside for a bit. New pics if I do!!

Lunch time for me, so reading my way through masses of posts.  Good to see our little Team Broody so active.

MM, welcome back from lurkdom!

Oh dear, the Jurassic Park gang do sound like a bit of a handful; I hope you are able to find some nice homes for them.

Your li’l school house is looking really good; looking forward to the pictures of the finished product and it’s new tenants enjoying their digs.

CC999, aaaw Muppet and Maddy are cute names.  Nice pics!  They are adorable!  I especially like the ones of the beautiful white silkies on the nice green lawn .. gorgeous!

R846, fingers crossed that you have success with your broody Isa Brown.  Sorry I can not comment on their broodiness either as I have no experience with Isa’s.

Lolz IC, I can only imagine what R846’s Isa would look like after trying to raise 27+ chicks .. I am thinking she would resemble a frizzle! lol

16 paws and IC .. beautiful pictures!  Keep them coming!

TG .. I agree, Gracie Belle definitely needs to lift her act and bring on the broody!

Welcome chicky68! With regards fence height, I think it really depends on the breed, determination and age of the chicken as to how well they fly.  I have five bantams.  I am in a residential area with low fences so when I purchased the original two, I clipped one of their wings (if you clip both wings, they apparently can still fly quite well. If you only clip one it makes them a little lopsided which causes a flight-balance issue).

I have not had to clip their wing since as they have no urge to leave home.  I kept two chicks from two separate hatches and also recently bought a Frizzle Pekin.  These three have not needed their wings clipping as they have learnt the boundaries from the older gals.

PS.  They are supervised free range only.

If you do consider clipping the wing, you need to be very careful that you do not clip too short and cause bleeding.  There are heaps of threads on safe wing clipping.

On the FF topic:

MM, I saw your comment regarding the Nestle Quik containers; they are not metal are they?

On the compost topic:

Yep, IC, no mice problems with this particular bin.  Also, the amount of time the girls hang around their ‘bug-house’ I doubt very much any mouse would be silly enough to move in.

I agree 16 paws, I would not be happy with a spinning bin.  I like the solid uprights as the ‘done’ stuff, ready for the garden, is easily accessed from the bottom and you just throw all the fresh stuff in at the top.

On the chicken count topic:

I have 5 bantams .. none sitting on eggs and as it happens, none laying eggs either! Lol

Using TG’s chicken math, I only have 2.5 chickens! :lau

Ahhaha how many do u think i should give her from the incubator after they hatch :)

Hello all

Have been lurking in the background stocking your posts and so excited to see that there are a whole new slew of eggs starting to warm up and there will be more babies running about soon! Can't wait to see pics.

So here's the update on my little clan, I finally broke down and removed the barrier between momma and her littles and the rest of the flock ( I guess I'm like a momma bear, don't mess with my babies!!! Lol) and to my surprise the others were more interested in checking out what the little ones are getting for breakfast so needless to say everyone is getting along great momma lays down the ground rules every now and then but not a real issue.

Thsts good :) when introduced mine the last time they killed them all by the next morning it was so sad :( but good to hear that urs are getting along good luck, how many do u have, and how old are they now.:D

I moved GB and Julie in to the small pen. They will be exposed to bocoup chicks! Hopefully that will trigger the switch. Julie isn't laying yet but I have heard that silkies sometimes will start laying then go broodie within days or weeks...hope so I have work for these girls to do!

I also sold Ozzie yesterday. He is going to a place where he will be the only rooster for 6 hens. He and the General have been fence fighting so it is good to get him to a place where he can be "cock of the walk" without having to prove himself. Way quieter here w/o the crowing contest. I don't expect the quiet will last though as I am getting a new rooster at some point AND I am keeping one of the bantam babies to breed to GB and Julie when he gets old enough.

In spite of selling Ozzie...my chicken math tells me my overall count is the same
wink.png

As far as other creatures go we have 3 dogs. A Boston Terrier, Booge

a large houndy looking mutt named Cyrus...with Booge here

and a small and ancient corgi/sheltie looking mutt named Magic on the left

Do the kids count as critters??? They are all up and mostly out of the house but all 3 will be here this summer at least for awhile.

We also have feral peacocks. They are lovely but noisy and messy. In addition they eat my chicken feed in the uncovered run which is another reason I sold Ozzie. I want to get a game mix rooster that will defend the feed and the girls from the peas better than he did.

Ok, I am not surprised, I was always bad at math anyway
wink.png

So I flunked chicken math lol.

Well in that case....
I have 2 RIR Lucy and Ethel
2 Golden Sex Links Daffodil and Buttercup
1 EE Daisy Mae
1 Jersey Giant Penny
1 Blue Cochin Layla
2 Barred Rocks Roxy and Dotty
1 Buff Orpington Savanna
Do not count chicks and roos
Bantams =3
Do Polish count as half? Polish=2
Do I have 11 and a half then Tommysgirl?
Oh my goodness, I think I need more chickens
idunno.gif

Yes...you always round down. Good thing you are here on this thread I shudder to think what could have happened if you hadn't known. Yes go get more. You need to fill that nest!
Ok Teila,
Here is mine...
6, yes I said 6 beautiful Yorkshire Terriers.
Ranging in age from 1 year to almost 13.
Let me say one thing....they do not call them Terriers for nothing!!!!!!
he.gif

They are a BIG handful.
I also love every minute of it
love.gif

They need me and I need them so it is a match made in heaven.

No to get too serious but last week was the first time in 34 years I have not had ( kids or a kid) in my home.My last one left home last wee

k. So I am an empty nester now. I am glad I have all these crazy animals in my life because they keep me real busy. I dont have a lot of time to be sad...
Marie

It gets easier Marie! Glad you are filling your life with such darlings. Funny I figured your username was related to dogs or cats but figured you had 4.

It is up to you but I wouldn't go more than 8 with a first time mommy. If you have a dog crate to move her and her little family into it will be best so that for a day or two they can get to know one another safe from mishaps. Also keep a close eye on them like 16 paws did so that you can avert disaster before anyone is killed. They don't always accept all of the chicks.

Oh that's so sad!!! I have 3 hens and 1 roo with 6 chicks. The 3 hens co-hatched these guys because they were all broody at the same time and kept swapping eggs so I had no clue who's was who's :he

Had separated the one hen with the most eggs and given her them all, I was afraid they would fight over the babies and the babies would get caught in the middle. so when the hen abandoned he last 2 I gave those eggs back to the other 2 broody girls ( I had replaced they eggs originally with wooden eggs just incase I had to give them back some eggs) so they hatched the last 2 babies but I had put the chicks with the original momma and she was fine with them all. The barrier placed between them was wire so they could still see each other and be side by side that may have helped :bow

The babies range from 2-3 wks as the first 5 hatch 1 per day but lost he 5th and the last 2 were a few days apart after that.

Good to know :) it's probably better of the other hens can see them as they will be use to them being there and not get jealous, plus then when u go to interstate them, it will be reasonably easy as they see them every day already :)) good idea :D I can't wit till mine hatch!! Only another 13 days for 28, and then 19 for 8 :D I hope I get at least about 15 or 20 :D

Wow you're one brave person!! I thought waiting on 7 eggs was stressful  can't image that many!!! But then again this is all new to me!

Tommysgirl,

Yes...you always round down. Good thing you are here on this thread I shudder to think what could have happened if you hadn't known. Yes go get more. You need to fill that nest!

You are such a bad influence on us here! LOL

That's all I need to hear is "go get more" and off to the feed
store I go!
Yes, you are right, it is a good thing I am here.

When I first signed up for BYC I had only four Yorke's, hence 16 paws. Then Abby got killed by 2 rattlesnakes hiding in our dog run. We tried to save her and got her to the hospital fast but after 2 anti-venoms her heart stopped in the middle of the night.
hit.gif

After that I had the opportunity to adopt 3 more Yorkie's from a terrible, abusive home that had 18 dogs.

I need to change my name to 24 paws!
