Im sorry for your loss. I lost my entire flock this spring. I have had new chicks/pullets but I know the feeling of loosing something so dear. We all know the feeling. I'll be praying for you, your hubby and your hen. I lost a hen from separation because her bbf was sick and died... All you can do is comfort her the best you can. I almost lost another one last year due to separation.TG, I can see why you are keeping those two! I love them! Maybe a cross you should duplicate in the future???![]()
The school house/broody coop is finished!!
The rowdy crowd just moved in this morning. A number of them are already roosting waaaay up there!
Sad news, my FIL's horse passed away the night before last. He was 33 and had a good long life. It was sad to hear my horse calling for him non-stop though. My husband is really a softy deep down, he couldn't handle listening to him. We got home at dusk last night and I went to lock the chickens up. Lucky, the hawk attack survivor, was outside the coop acting a bit confused. I collected eggs and did my nightly count. Her sister (same breed, hamburg) was missing. My husband was pretty upset about that too because those two were stuck together like glue. Again, the softy comes out, and he gets on the four wheeler and does a sweep of the property for her. No sign at all. She did lay an egg yesterday, so it was probably late afternoon to evening when she went missing. She and lucky had been venturing farther and farther away from the flock. I was hoping she just got lost and would show up this morning for breakfast. No luck so far. I guess I paid the Mother Nature tax again.
Anyhow, back to cleaning for me! I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!
I hate that when they get picked on! They are too cute. Guess they are going to be house chickens huh? LolHere are recent pics of my bantam babies...
I love the coloring on her and her crest puts me over the edge!
He has one too and it is SPECKLED!
Petunia ditched them last night and they were being picked on so I moved them into the broody box for the night.
Not sure where they will live permanently yet other than with me.
Have a great day all!
had the same thing happen last year. 2 hens seeing around 8 eggs each. Constantly swapping the eggs back and forth, taking turns. They managed to hatch out 2 chicks and only one survived and that Chick had 2 mom's. That is the one and only time I will let hens set their own eggs. I set 16 eggs imma hatch at least 14 chicks.. and they will all survive. So I'm better at it than my chickens are. No sense in wasting eggs. I want babies? I will hatch them. Incubator full, then I have eggs for breakfast. So... boo to broody hens at my place.G'Day .. another newbie here with a broody on eggs. Actually newbie all round, don't even have an incubator; my girls were 3 months old when I got them. If it happens, first chicks ever! I am posting to wish you all good luck and I would also love to know how you go. Maybe we can help each other out a bit, I know I need it! lol.
Two weeks ago: I have 3 pet bantam hens. I was only going to have two but two became three (basic chicken-math I am told lol). I was warned that Cilla, my Black Cochin, may go broody and sure enough she did. 3 days she hardly left the nesting box and after hours and hours of 'broody' research, some of the options sounded very eeew, I made a decision to give her what she wants and she is now quite happily sitting on 5 silkie bantam eggs.
What have I done?! She may be ready for this but am I? I am both apprehensive and excited .. I have numerous 'what-ifs' going through my head; what am I going to do with them if they hatch; besides keep one of course (basic chicken-math lol)? What if they are roosters (can't keep roosters) what will I do with them? What do I feed them? Extensions and alterations are now required to the chateau so that if they do hatch they have somewhere 'safe'. Yaada, yaada :-D
Then I realised, if an 8 month old little bantam chicken can do this surely I can! Lots of research and one day at a time. If chickens could talk, Cilla is probably telling me to "Chill, Mum, I got this covered"
Two week's later (now): Wow! Some strange stuff has been happening! The other day, I get home from work and Cilla is sitting on 3 eggs and Dusty (Bantam Langshan) is sitting on 3; 2 of Cilla's and 1 she laid! So I gave Cilla her 2 back and took away the unfertile one. But Dusty wasn't having any of that and 5 minutes later, had stolen 2 back lol. I'm thinking OK, fine, I'll leave you to it. But the next day, Dusty has obviously figured that being broody is not as much fun as it looked and gave up and Cilla has all the eggs again. Normality returns for 4 days. My hubby was working from home on Thursday; he sets up under the gazebo and while he works the girls can supervised-free-range .. he looks up to check on them, 'Yep, Cilla on her eggs, uh nope, that's Dusty!' .. Apparently, they tag-teamed 4-5 times throughout the day, taking turns sitting on the eggs! We have a week to go (Friday) and I am going to be very surprised if anything hatches and if it does, I wonder who is going to be Mum? lols
I am so so sorry. It sounds like you did exactly what was right by her and your flock.I am feeling really lost tonight. when we got the frizzles I noticed about a week later that poe the youngest one, had a runny eye. It was only one. No bubbles, no other symptoms I talked to the bet about it and she thought it was odd as there were no other symptoms at all and it was just one eye. its cleared up on its own after about a week or so. so this evening we are out with the chickens and I look over at Poe and the same eye is just covered in bubbles. I will admit I panicked. All I could think about was it being mg and those little baby chicks hatching this week. So I made an executive decision to cull poe. II insisted on doing it myself because I felt responsible and because I wanted to make sure she was calm and went on her way peacefully.I was actually okay at the time I am not so good now. She was the smallest little thing. Which also makes me wonder if she didn't contract it as an embryo.
This will never happen again. if the rest of the flock are infected I will just treat them. Please cross everything and say a prayer for the checks that they are ok and they make it through. Tomorrow I am bleaching at the entire coop and I am going to see the vet and see what she thinks about doing a preventative antibiotic. Really what it means is i will never bring new chickens in nor will mine ever go anywhere.
I am really just so heartbroken at no time did I ever even imagine killing one of my chickens. They are my babies
I hate that when they get picked on! They are too cute. Guess they are going to be house chickens huh? Lol

Sorry your broodies didn't do a better job. We love our broodies on this thread. So far mine do a way better job than I ever did with the incubator.
