Hatching with 2 broodies

So better give an update, there has been some other dramas...

The Darkhorse still has her 2 eggs, the second candling revealed large air sack development and larger more active chick embryo inside. That was last Saturday night (i know how to party lol). She is still only taking a short break every few days, but eating the food inside her box as well. She moved the nest area within the box after the dead eggs were removed and now has a better view out the door lol..

The dramas, Lola the one coming back from moult managed to jag her foot (right on top of the ankle in front) onto i assume a piece of random wire, it seemed to have gone deep and it bleed and oosed for days, we keep cleaning it and dressing it and now looks to have closed over and she is much happier. We fed her some extra beef pieces during this week. She has been looking quite pale at points. Quite worrying cause i do like that chook.... I think she is almost better, will remove the bandage tonight after bed and hopefully it won't get pecked and open up again.

Sunday / Monday for 2 new chicks hopefully, not counting...

Congratulations to everyone's family's, Teila, you have reminded me that my closed in chick free ranging area is far from complete, I must get that done on Saturday otherwise i think some local bird of prey might get a feed...

Good to hear from you again Pooman ... fingers crossed for Sunday / Monday! I am missing the excitement of the impending hatch but luckily I get to share in the excitement of Team Broody’s hatches! Don't forget to keep us up to date and of course, lots of baby-pictures!

Aaaw, I am sorry to hear about Lola; I hope that she is on the mend as you have indicated. You probably know this but I am going to share because I figure it is better to share something someone already knows than not share and have them lose a chicken. I lost one of my girls because of a cut on her foot, she developed a Staph infection and passed away quite quickly (2 days). Now I always have a course of antibiotics on hand, just in case!

Yes, first thing i wanted to do was give her a course so something didn't develop, I was worried... So called vet and they wouldn give it to me without seeing the bird. Now, I love the girls but, she is a $20 bird, 2 more just like her hatching this week hopefully, not counting... But I'm not going to be spending $60 consult, $20 drugs, $something else... For 1 bird, there are currently 8, I need to be able to care for them myself... Where do I get antibiotics from? Let me know so I can complete the chicken first aid kit lol

Pooman, I get my broad spectrum antibiotic from my local produce store where I get their feed and lots of other goodies. It is specifically for birds; sets me back about $18 and I always have some on hand in the pet cupboard :)

Happy Birthday to your kitty!

That little bed looks so cozy. She is lucky to have a mommy like you.

Thanks Teila, I'll check next time im there. What form is it, a bottle? a jar? Syringes? , how do you give it to them? What is the one you buy called? Thanks heaps :)

Here are Mum and Dad of the remaining viable egglings (it's not an egg or a chicken yet haha), we have Mavis and Rocky, Orpingtons from the breeder which have remained in their quarantine due to fighting between the Roo's (which Goliath cannot risk with only one eye left, if he loses the other it will be the 20 hour slow cooker for sure .....)

Wonder what the chicks will look like.

Happy birthday to your Chimee, Teila - she looks a bit like my Penelope!

Both chicks were with their moms on the big-girl roost today!! So adorable - I'll have to keep my camera on me all the time so I can capture it at some point.

Feeling a little sheepish posting the pics below, but I had to share Bettina's crazy molting pattern. She lost all of her bottom feathers at once, and now they're growing back, as funny spikes. It's the opposite of a fuzzy butt picture, you could say.

On the plus side, Grace is looking almost normal these days, and Rousseau is growing in some head feathers she inexplicably lost a few months ago.
