Hatching with 2 broodies

Good Luck...let us know if she is talking to the eggs and they are answering...I was sure I had chicks my first hatch but it was just eggs answering.

I just wanted to share some pictures I just took of Freckles. She is the sister to the hen we lost last week named Speckles. She is a bantam cochin. In my experience, cochins have been one of friendliest breeds I have had.

She is absolutely Beautiful!

Ok, another problem,
I went to go check on Penny and she had broken a couple eggs in her nest, I picked up one of the eggs to try and clean off the junk and I broke one! All of the remaining eggs are pretty dirty.
I tried to clean them off a little but the yolk and nest box material are pretty stuck to these little guys.
Anyone have any advice on what to do?
Do I need to start over with new eggs or just see what happens?

Ok, another problem,

That's a tough one. An egg broke during my broody hatch, and most of the other eggs got dirty. I tried to clean them off carefully with a cloth wettened with a touch of alcohol. In the end, only two of my eggs hatched, and they very well could have been the two eggs I did not try to clean (I had 4 dark brown and 4 blue eggs). If you are only a couple days into this hatch, I'd start over. Those egg shells are just too vulnerable to be exposed to cleaning, and the gunk could invite bacteria.

Are you sure Penny really wants to be broody?

Coincidentally, I had my first broken egg in the nest today (actually, right outside of it), since the broody hatch! Bettina's egg, unfortunately, which means I lost the most egg bang for the buck, as her 70+ gram eggs are harder to replace. Another egg was knocked out of the nest and Lucy's egg had a little hole, like a pip. Who knows what set them off this time.

Sneaking in to say hello!! Spring is trying to happen here… random bulbs are sprouting in the yard, the grass is greening up, and the flowering trees are gearing up for their spring show!! That said, we have had snow once a week for the last… forever. High of 79 predicted for this Wednesday!

Teila, your girls are getting sooooooo big! All those with broodies, excited to see what's to come!! We loooooove pictures! Oh goodness. I have spring fever. Great pic of Reggie, Liz! Saddles are ordered, I ended up with 5. Maybe I will make them from here on out. No time now right now and for less than 5 bucks shipped, I may never make them! My time is expensive, LOL! Now, that is it almost April, I suppose I should get to making the outdoor brooder/grow out coop for my April 25th arrival. Hubby has reminded me that there is plenty of spare wood in the barn. Maybe this weekend.

Nope! Jan still isn't laying! Who knows what that's about? Could she just be a non-layer? She seems healthy enough, and Desi still thinks she's hot.

I'm thinking that the egg may have gotten broken today because of the crazy-loud thunder we had! It was probably at least as scary as a dog to the chickens. Looks like we're finally getting winter here in CA, just as everyone else is finally getting spring. (actually, spring has pretty well sprung here too, thanks to the late rain).

That is interesting about only the two eggs hatching. I wasnt thinking when I was trying to clean the eggs and I was turning them over pretty quick, I wonder if I scrambled them up too much by trying to clean them? I am such a dum-dum at times. I act and then think later, maybe I should try turning that around?
If I start her over with new eggs do I have to do it at night?
Yes, she really does want to be broody,She is stubborn and determined, a bad combo. I think she is just clumsy because she is huge. I believe she stepped on them trying to get out of her nest box. They dont call them jersey giants for nothing,,,they are really big girls

Sorry about your broken egg. Sounds like the circus was in town at your place also. Maybe that earthquake is shaking our girls up a bit...so to speak!

Ah sorry to hear about the eggs Nothing over here yet but she seems to be doing this pecking thing at the hay around her making her nest ready for an arrival hopefully did anyone else witness this with there broodies?
