Hatching with 2 broodies

Y'all have got me soooo excited for my little chickies to arrive! Absolutely beautiful pictures of Mommas and babies everyone! This is my second and last order from a hatchery--- one that, with some luck, will provide me with a broody in a year or so!! They ship out tomorrow!! I have two LF Blue Cochins and two Buff Orps as my (hopeful) future broodies. I also have two welsummers and two cuckoo marans to add some more dark brown eggs to my basket. Lastly, I have one welsummer rooster chick (will be named Friday, after my Dad's childhood rooster that used to ride on the handlebars of his bicycle) and one EE rooster. Big hopes for these guys… Willie's successors and future flock sire and protectors!! I guess I may get some extra males in my order as well. We will have to see what sort I get. I would love to have a handful of EE to choose from!

The coop got a big clean out yesterday so I can focus on the littles for a few weeks. I made space for the new arrivals in my laundry room and have their box lined and ready for shavings. I need to clean the food trough and waterers and have my hubby hook up the light to the ceiling. Oh… and get my baby monitor set up in there. I'm a little OCD in that department. No so much because I need to listen to the chicks, but more so because I do not trust that heat lamp in the house. I put a smoke alarm in there as well. Ok. I am ready. Right?

Teila! Lulu is beautiful! So happy you found her (and I am sure she is more than happy that you did as well!) Sounds like she is fitting right in! Your girls are so pretty! I am glad you are enjoying your time off! I have both boys home with me, and it reminds me just how great they both are. Two years age difference, but they truly are best friends. We have plans to get some hostas and new guinea impatiens to plant in the little window sill bed. I may have to get my tomato plants and start my mint up as well.

TG, do you think a Welsummer Roo over a Cuckoo Maran hen will produce sexlinks? Not the perfect combo I know, but just curious?

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Good afternoon all, the weather is crappy here rainy for the next couple of days so can't blame that last chick for not wanting to make an appearance. So still at 5 Sara's as we speak and hoping for he best for the final Sara as promised here is a pic of the whole clan just wish they would have posed in stead of scurry so please excuse the blur :p

I guess this is what happens when 3 girls decide to go broody within days of each other and keep swapping eggs it's a game of who's is who's. Fingers crossed that final chick makes a safe arrival. Will post pics tomorrow if everyone will pose for the camera. Lol

Yipeee!!!! There is always room for another Sara.

Watching a mother hen talk to her unhatched eggs and then watching her raise her chicks are up there as one of my life time favourite moments and I am so happy that I experienced them

OK, granted they are not adorable fuzzy butts but I took some pictures today....

"I iz gunna be 9 weeks 2morro":

"Mum! Stop taking pictures of her and pay attention to me!!!":

Ever had one of those moments when you take a picture and know it is going to be one of your favourites? I had one today!. I love this one :)

"I iz cute too!"

Beautiful birds! That Blondie is pretty darn gorgeous but every last one of your girls is easy on the eyes.
Thank you so so much!!! I swear I have read hundreds of genetics-related posts, and I always end up more confused than when I started as they without fail start bringing up incomplete dominants, aleles, small letters vs big letters, and a bunch of other stuff that makes my head spin... I did try the chicken calculator too, but, again, get confused on most of those... not enough understanding of the entire thing yet, I can't even seem to find the right selection for all white chickens!

Which makes it so so nice to hear things in simple terms I can understand - THANK YOU!

As per our new rules (lol Teila!!!!), here are some latest pics from the kindergarten. I think Cenere has been teaching them the photobomb technique.

Such sweet babies! I love your color variety. You are welcome. I have had the exact same experience trying to learn the genetics stuff...I glaze over and my eyes cross

I am glad I was able to express myself. I guess it's all these years in the cassroom.
Ahha yup I'm very excited

got 45 eggs sitting waiting to go I've for a few silikies , cream leg bars some more eggs from a columbine hen, from a welsummer, from a leghorn, from warrens, bluebelles, light sussex, or black rock. these hens are all feee ranged with several cockerels - welsummer, silver laced wyandotte, cream legbar and burford brown, so who the father is of each egg is anyone's guess! Plus I got some more from a different friend, he also gave my 3 duck eggs which I'm gonna try and hatch to

I'm excited

Good Luck...I will be interested in how the shipped eggs do. I don't want to discourage you but since they normally recommend getting shipped eggs in the incubator within 24 hours of their arrival I am curious what your result will be.

The sad part is she's not broody at all, I guess she just doesn't like to be interrupted while laying

Crazy hens! I hope I get a broody soon, I would love to watch a hen raise chicks!

What breed(s) do you have @SAHchickenmom If you are looking to add broody girls my Australorp, her Daughter who is a barnyard mix, a Dorking and a Dorking cross barnyard mix have been my broodies so far.

Beakface saw the babies for the first time and went into her broody noise and Puffer fish act. She isn't on the nest yet but I am willing to bet she will be going broody soon too. I am hoping to give her Birchen Marans eggs when she does.

Then the next proven broody will get BBS Ameraucana

I have Orps, rir, ee's and a Brahma. You would think one of them would go broody. I want Australorps bad but can't find any around here and would prefer not to order from a hatchery. I am picking up a Speckled Sussex trio today, keeping my fingers crossed!

The Orps would be good candidates for sure. RIRs and not known as a broody breed but you never know...EEs are hit and miss, it depends on what they have in their background and I think Brahmas brood too. I added a Speckled Sussex because I had heard that she might be broody. She is just under a year and she hasn't gone yet but there is plenty of room for hope that she will.

If you go on your state's social page here on BYC you may be able to find Australorps or someone who will incubate hatching eggs for you. Good Luck.

Happy for you. No more hatcheries for me either but there is something so like Christmas about getting a box of chicks...you sound totally prepared LOL! I am off to research your question. Hope I bring you good news.

Pics ASAP of the new littles and I think it is super sweet that you are naming Wellie roo after your Dad's childhood friend. We had a white hen named Shirley when I was a kid. I think she was probably a white rock or a totally zen leghorn. I carried her around like a doll. Laid her on her back in my baby carriage and she would just chill there she was my girl. Then she was attacked by a pack of puppies and that was it
sad.png
I named my favorite Del with the least black after her and ironically that girl flew over the fence and into the neighbors yard where she met their JRT
hit.gif
No more Shirleys for me.

ETA Yes! Your girls will be black the boys will be barred. Don't know if the boys will have a head spot but the barring shows up pretty quickly on the wings of the boys. My Red over cuckoo boy hatched with creamy wing tips and a white face...that's him on the far left in my avatar. Yours may be similar.

I am sorry it took so long for your incubator to arrive. That is such a bummer. If you don't get a great result it won't really be the fault of the egg shipper though. Hatchability decreases a little each day that they sit unincubated so you can blame the people who were supposed to get your bator to you last week

Still

for a great hatch for you.
