Hatching with 2 broodies

2 chicks this morning! one ilooks black with gold on its head???It isn't fluffed yet the other one is and it is BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both are darling I also have an additional pip. I very carefully moved everyone into the maternity box this morning and the fourth egg moved in my hand.!

I have a busy day today which is probably good or else...in spit of telling myself I shouldn't I would be out there ALL DAY

Day 18 is tomorrow for me. I can not wait!

Ok, I have a new theory on wing sexing... it's not the wings that grow longer on the girls, it's the butt that grows bigger on the boys!

I swear their wings are now pretty much identical in length BUT Blackie's butt has doubled in length... so whereas on others wings come almost to the tail now, on him it's only halfway. Although my girl candidate number one still has more feathers than the others, and is sprouting a tail.

So I guess I either have 5 roos 1 pullet, or 5 pullets 1 roo. Hmmm. I need to stop staring at their wings for a few days.

OMGoodness!!!!! Today is day 18 so I went to move mama and eggs to the hatching pen. She would have been in there the whole 21 days but she is a top girl and no one messes with her nest so I let her stay in the coop...anyway I grabbed an egg and it cheeped at me! it was fully pipped!!! I couldn't hep myself, I peaked at another and same thing! I will have chicks hatch tonight!!!!! Tomorrow I will move them all.

These are my BBS babies please please please let there be a pullet in there and pretty please please please let her be splash or blue.

Congrats!!!!! Wow I had the same thing happen with my 1st broody! All 5 hatched under her and there were some like due 2 days after and they were hatching that day! Once they hear eachother peep, well, it all pips from there...

Meet Gael! She appears to be Blue and Red. Those are the school colors of St. Mary's College of CA where my daughters graduated; their mascot is the Gael so there you have it.

There is a third baby and the fourth shell is peeping up a storm. Not sure yet but baby 3 looks SPLASH!!!!!!!!!!

So… went out and did my afternoon chores. Checked water. MJ was dying to come out, so I let her have a little spa time. Being that it is a balmy 92!! degrees out, I am sure she wanted to get off the nest a bit. She had a good 40 minutes before I reminded her that she has eggs to look after. Tomorrow is lockdown. Will she really refuse to leave the nest til the babies hatch?? I tightened up some loose ends in the maternity ward. Should be good to go…. or at least as good as it gets!!

Thinking about starting to integrate the pullets next week or so… they will be 9 weeks. This could be interesting.

oh my gosh... I might have ANOTHER broody! it's like they knew the title of the thread haha, 2 broodies!!!

she is in the nest and her breast is picked clean! she doesn't get too mad when I remove her, actually she doesn't even make a sound. she just walks away like nothing happened, and she's still laying eggs so maybe it's not full broody mode yet. GAH! What am I gonna do with TWO broodies?!

oh and guess what...
Bertha was off the nest today and I looked in her nest. there are 2 extra eggs in there, both from my wyandotte! I am going to candle them tonight after dark. since I think those 2 are behind by about a week, they will go in the incubator with the other eggs which I just put in yesterday.

@16 paws I have heard that putting plywood between the pens at ground level will stop fence fighting since the can't see on another. a bit of a pain but I am planning to do it. I only have the one right now but I will have 3 mature ones by fall and I will do it if I need to.

I have seen broodies get up even on hatch day...lock down is for incubators hens make up their own minds.
