Hatching with 2 broodies

:frow Hi Friends! Remember me?   Sooo… there is no way I could possibly catch up on everything. I wasn't kidding when I said (LOOOONG AGO) that it was a bad time for me to let MJ hatch eggs because of vacation. 3 weeks, 5,400 some miles and nine states later we are BACK!

A few ups and downs here on the homestead…

We lost a white leghorn hen, Clarabelle, while we were gone. No reason.. but I guess it happens. The original flock and the easter youngsters are getting along super well in the big coop. 4 of the white leghorn cockerels have decided roosting in the pine tree is a good idea. They sit about 15-20 feet up. I wave and wish them good luck each night. Their branch of choice is wrapped in poison ivy and if I look at poison ivy longer than two seconds I end up with a rash.

Cielo is turning out to be a stunning young man. SO many colors!! I will try to get a pic. He is quite submissive to all of the roosters, so I think teaming him up with Willie might work out well!

MJ and the chickies are doing well. One definite Roo in the bunch, but I have my suspicions about almost all of them. MJ has resumed laying, but still cares for the littles in the School House. Pics to come!

Hope everyone is well!!!

Welcome back! I really you very well.

Here are the big babies! One obvious Roo, but it is a leghorn/slw mix so I expected to know early with that one. The rest have me confused. Everyone ended up with Willie's rose comb. LOVE the one with the black head with a little brown. It is small, so hopefully it is a pullet! Any guesses?

Welcome back! Hope you had a great vacation!
Wow, it's been a long time since we have seen Cielo and Anna - they are both absolutely gorgeous and almost all grown up!

On your rose comb babies, how old are they? Usually it gets quite obviously pink on the boys at around 4 weeks, I think it was even earlier for mine, though of course it depends on the breeds involved in the cross... the base also is wider on some boys very very early, and a bright yellow before turning red, like it was with my pretty boy from first hatch - I could tell from day 1. I second the pullet vote on the one next to the watermelon, and a couple of others (those next to Leghorn cross in one pic) also seem girls from what I can see, but can't really tell on the others without a close up and knowing the age.

Wow, sounds like he is a little bully, a cute little bully for sure. That cracks me up, he is taking everyone on! Slow down there boy....you need to grow up a bit first. hehe

Actually, he isn't trying it with anyone smaller or same size as he is, only with the bigger ones, so I'm not so sure if that's bullying or some sort of a superpower complex.

It sure is hilarious to watch, especially since the bigger kids (8-week olds) are mostly just confused by his "attacks" and don't react except to stare at him in disbelief!

Main update around here is that the little assisted hatch roo (the smallest chick) got injured yesterday. :(

Looks like someone tore a chunk of skin off his little wing where it meets his back yesterday, fortunately no one else picked on him and he seems good as new this morning with the wound less obvious, he is very busy etc... I took him in the house to clean him up with some qtips, so glad I didn't have to remove him as he would have been VERY upset isolated from his family and that stress would probably do way more harm.

I suspect the younger broody Bella did it though, she is becoming very nasty with the other chicks and they are all afraid of her YET the broodies and chicks stay together. I really hope I don't have to separate them but I am thinking I may have to, that little roo is the one I can easily identify and yes, he is special to me, I was very worried yesterday and was terrified the others would gang up on him and eat him alive. I kept running out there to check on him until they finally settled down for the night.

I have to wonder if the constant business of chicks with a broody keeps chicks from pecking each other much though, they are ALWAYS busy as the mama's show them one thing after another to peck at, they don't seem to have much time to get bored and start picking on each other.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear that! But glad you didn't have to remove him though, and that he is ok... Completely understand your anxiety!

Hope you don't have to separate the families, but even if you do, at least you didn't have to isolate him... don't know what to advise, you will probably know if you need to step in by watching them though.

Not a great day over here either - Clementina, the orange girl from my first hatch this year, has a pretty bad case of sour crop - a big squishy water balloon is what it felt like this morning... I didn't have the time to make the decision whether or not to make her vomit as she did it herself when she tried to move away from me,... lots of liquid came out. Seems a bit better now, but she is also hunched over and walking funny (when she does walk, as she isn't moving much), so I'm just praying there isn't another underlying issue... Any advice is welcome, though I completely understand that it's hard to give advice not knowing exactly what the problem is. Wish I knew too!

They are 5 weeks old. I will try to get some better pictures. They are warming up to me a bit. They are all SLW x EE mixes except for the two white ones, which are SLW x White Leghorn. I feel comfortable saying I have one of each for the leghorns. I will take a better look at the rest. 4 of the EE mixes are very alike so it will be hard to single them out. I'll do my best!!

Guess what everyone...
Another broody....
Now I have 3.
First picture is Pancake
Second picture is Penny, always broody Jersey Giant
Third picture is Sophia Loren, one of two of my polish girls, first time broody.
