Hatching with detached air sacs

We had eggs shipped & have been incubating them. I noticed the air sacs looked oddly shaped, but didn’t think too much into it as at the time the chickens were still developing. Well fast forward, we are on day 20 & I had checked them one last time prior to day 18 & noticed the air sacs still looked very odd. So my question is, will I need to help them hatch? I hear some chirping so I know there are some alive in there but it is day 20 & none are pipping yet. Also should they be on their side or face up during hatching with the detached air sacs?
Thank you!

We have incubated lots of our own chicken eggs in the past. I never knew detached air sacs were a thing. These ones we had shipped to us. Still lots for me to learn in the chicken world I guess.

***update, 5 of the 6 eggs are pipping. I have more in a separate incubator expected to hatch next week that have detached air sacs as well (all shipped), so hoping they do as well! Hopefully these babies can hatch on their own without assistance at this point. I did everything normally as I was unaware of the detached air sacs.

Detached or saddled? Detached the air cells float all over the eggs. Saddled they go up the side of the egg. If saddled they should be fine. Just treat as a normal hatching egg once they are at lockdown. Place biggest part of air cell facing the top.

I will post a pic of my saddled air cell from the batch I have going now.

They were definitely saddled! When I read about it, it said it was from a detached air sac 🤷🏼‍♀️
Well 6/6 chicks hatched today. So woohoo! There were other eggs from the same shipment but they never developed, so these were the 6 I was expecting & all had the saddle air sac. We have more hatching next week that were also shipped & also all have the saddle air sac.

It is common in shipping eggs. The eggs get bounced around in shipping which causes the air cell to become "semi detached" if fully detached the air cell just floats around in the egg as there is nothing really holding it in place. if semi then it kind of moves along the side so as they are growing it settles a bit but grows up the sides of the eggs (or that is how I understand it. and my experience with it). I had some last year that were extremely saddled. none of the chicks had any issues hatching. Not sure if that is the norm but that was my experience with it.

I have much higher hopes for the remaining eggs to be hatched next week now. I was real worried when I got to googling about it, that we weren’t going to have many hatch. But it sounds exactly like what you said. We had 6/6 hatch yesterday. So hoping for the others I’m expecting to hatch, to hatch! Thank you!

that is great!!!!!!!!! What day are they due to hatch next week? Mine should hatch on 3/17!!!!!!!

if you would like go to the hatch-a-long part of this and there is a March 2023 hatch-a-long with a bunch of others that have chicks hatching in March that you can talk to and get some good advice as well. :)
